Wouldn't that be the next logical step?

I'm not even saying that's a bad idea, I'm just wondering if you've thought about it.

My atheism has nothing to do with my opinions on sex and prostitution.

That said, I support the legalization of prostitution. For one thing, legalization makes it easier for prostitutes to report rapists and abusers to police. It makes it easier for brothels to regulate health issues like condom use and STD testing. It eliminates pimps. Prostitutes might have an employer, but wages and benefits are regulated and open to oversight.

Finally, nothing prevents women (or men for that matter) from sleeping with and/ or marrying rich guys they don't love in exchange for new clothes, a nice car, a big house, etc. Women are free to use their bodies to get money and material goods already, they just can't insist on being paid up front. So what's the big deal about legalizing prostitution?

I'm not an Atheist and I put it to you that legalizing prostitution would provide protection from disease and abuse for the women who are involved in the profession. The only people hurt by the illegality of prostitution are those least able to protect themselves.

From a Biblicaly religious point of view - if prostitution had been illegal in Jericho when the spies got there, what would they have done??

Actually I'm for legalizing any victemless crime. In those homes where perhaps a man does not have an active sex life as he'd might wish--ask yourself--if you were the wife who didn't particularly wanted to be bothered in this area--would you rather have him having an affair (in which he might just leave and run off with someone else) or rather have him paying for an encounter with someone he's not going to get involved in. The bible recognized this I think, the old testament is full of stories about wives, husbands, and the mans concubines.

I'm a Christian, and I think that all adult, consensual sex should be legal. We live in a country (at least those of us from the US) that was founded upon social and economic freedoms...not specific religion. With that in mind, I also think (in the case of the US) that gay marriage should probably be allowed. This country was not founded upon Christianity, though many of our laws are based upon that faith (since many of the first people to come here were seeking religious freedom from the Church of England), but upon freedom...including religious freedom. We, as Christians, cannot force people to believe what we believe, just as God allows us to not follow him if we so choose.

Absolutely. People can legally have sex out of love, lust, pity, drunkeness, spite, office politics, and on and on.

Whose business is it if consenting adults want to exchange sex for money?

Edit: Wow. I have never seen such a complete consensus in this forum. Even many christians who chimed in agree that prostitution should be legal.

Anyone who has been married for any length of time knows that Prostitution is a normal part of every marriage.

There are times when wives get headaches at important times, when things aren't going their way, and times when husbands do the same. Money might not exchange hands, but services and benefits do.

I am a Christian and I think prostitution should be legal by way if there being no laws in about it. I don't agree with it, but I think you should have the freedom to do whatever you want to with your body, whether that is selling it for sex, or killing yourself with heroin.

Prostitution SHOULD be legal...why not. Things that are illegal were deemed so in the past by religious fuddy-duddies.

How else can we explain something like alcohol being legal...a leading killer on the roads, but marijuana isn't. If they outlawed alcohol again, would churches still get to use wine to substitute blood?

Naturally! There's absolutely nothing wrong with prostitution. Of course, I would personally prefer not to visit a prostitute, for a number of reasons, but I certainly don't think that we should deny that freedom to others.

Yes, actually, I think that should be legal too. Although I think zoning rules for sexually oriented businesses are fine, and I think those could apply to prostitution just like they do to strip clubs or adult bookstores.

As an side, I think it's inconsistent that porn production is legal but prostitution is not. When you produce a porn movie, aren't you just paying two people to have sex while you videotape it? How is that different?
