I've always wondered this myself. In fact if God is everything and all of us are god, shouldn't God be referred to as "it?" But that some how seems disrespectful. the truth of the matter is God is all of us and everything, in that way we are all just pieces of God. Some day we will all realize this and come together, then we'll really see what God "looks" like. Like the pieces of a large puzzle falling into place !

Well, because the word "It" is considered insulting, and the male pronoun is used as the generic one.
It's not a statement of gender so much as a linguistical occurence. However, some do believe that God has an inherent gender, and tend to base it on man being in God's own image; most simply view that as a metaphor.

Its to further the idea that man is better than woman.
"God, the most powerful being in the universe is my gender. Therefore i am more powerful and more important."

Because in Genesis it says that God created Adam out of His own image. Woman, wasn't created in the image of God, but of man.

Without variation God always refers to Himself as a male.
Contrary to the silly notion of "unisex", there are basic characteristics of males and females even before they are born. And God has the characteristics which He gave primarily to man.

it is recorded in the Bible that Jesus referred to God as his father. we have faith that this is recorded correctly. we don't know for sure that God has a gender--ancient Jewish writings say that God has many names, some are masculine and some are feminine.

God said, let us create male and female in our own image. So God created man and woman in their image. It is in Genesis I believe God is both feminine and masculine.

I don't. God is energy. Energy has no gender.
For those who wish to dispute...IF God is a part of everything, then it only makes sense that God is energy because energy is a part of everything.

Because the people who first wrote about god were men and decided that god would also be male. If you want, you're welcome to make up a religion with a goddess instead.
