the promise of the 72 virgins comes from al-suyuti (it is a hadith - or 'wise saying').
the virgins are not actual women but houris (female genies) whose virginity is renewed every night.
an islamic martyr (shahid) would not want an actual woman to share paradise with him, since women are inferior beings (it is by no means established in islam that women have souls at all).

The specific Hadith in which the number of virgins is specified is Hadith Al-Tirmidhi in the Book of Sunah (volume IV, chapters on The Features of Paradise as described by the Messenger of Allah, chapter 21, About the Smallest Reward for the People of Paradise. The same hadith is also quoted by Ibn Kathir in his Quranic commentary (Tafsir) of Surah Al-Rahman: "The Prophet Muhammad was heard saying: 'The smallest reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from Al-Jabiyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana'a [Yemen]."

I saw an Islamic male being interviewed on TV. He was asked about the virgins, and he responded that they were created by Allah for that purpose and did not have souls, were not real people.
I don't think mainstream Muslims believe that... but it appears to be a part of that man's belief system.

It's amazing how Muslims swallow whole what an illiterate, uneducated man, such as Mohammed, tells them. He had to say something to get them to be willing to murder.
And you think with all the murdering going on that they've run out of 72 virgins....

Silly Man. The 72 virgins are the left over wives of Mormons. They just pass them off as virgins.

Just to clear things up for you, the 72 virgins thing is a myth. People who die fighting for the cause of God are rewarded with heaven, and heavenly things, but there's no such mention of being rewarded with virgins.
Suicide bombers are not "jihadists" fighting for the cause of God, but are murderers and comitted suicide. The only thing waiting for them in the afterlife is the hellfire. Not based only on my opinion, but based on the Quran.

It's made up.
72 is a number that is seen in most religions as far back as we can trace. There is a reason behind this, but those who want to know will seek it for themselves.
