i like something on ebay that cost $20.00 but, i have a $50.00 visa gift card. when i buy this item does the rest of the money goes to my paypal account or stay on the gift card?

It stays on the gift card since you are only authorizing $20 to be spent.

Whoa. Before you bid on an item, check with the seller and ask if you can bay via a $50.00 gift card.
I have been selling on ebay for sometime now and have never encountered a question like this. There are a ton of scams where as the buyer will send you a money order or bogus check for $1000 to purchase a $500 dollar item.
The buyer will give some kind of lame excuse and ask you to return the $500 to you along with the item you purchased.
Problem is, by the time your check or money order clears the bank, and you have sent back the extra money and the product, you will find out that the check or money order is a fraud.
Not sure how I would handle your question if I was the seller, and you were the buyer.
