I got a thank you note, someone handed it to me, and it wasn't closed. Why don't people lick the envelope shut?

If the note is not being mailed, there is no reason to seal it as there is no threat of the card falling out in transit. There is nothing wrong etiquette wise with just folding the flap into the open part of the envelope.

It also is courteous because it prevents the recipient from having to rip the envelope open or get a letter opener if they wish to keep the card and envelope as many people do.

It is for this reason that most formal wedding invitations come with two envelopes, one outer that is addressed/stamped/canceled/sealed, and then a nice inner envelope that just has the names of the recipients and is not sealed.

However, it is a best practice to always mail correspondence, especially a thank you note. It shows you took the extra time.

Some people are deathly afraid of germs, and can't get over thinking about all the people who have handled that envelope before them, leaving their germs on the paper for them to lick.

I would at least tuck the flap into the envelope so it wasn't flapping in the breeze!

Probably because they had just written the note and you would be able to tell if the envelope was wet from her recently licking it. Your friend tried to spare you the grief of having to handle her spit. I sometimes do that too, just tuck the flap in if I just wrote the note and the person is close by.

It's quite customary to not lick the envelope if you are not sending it through the mail. In this case you tuck the flap into the envelope.

I don't know. I always lick the envelopes when I give to the recipients.
Maybe people are lazy.

They feel there's nothing private in the card. They don't like the taste of glue.

Because it tastes gross. This is one reason why I like e-mail.
