Today I noticed that there is a painful lump about the size of a marble (maybe a little smaller) on the right side of my neck. It is right where my jawbone ends. About 4 inches or so below my ear. You can not see the lump ... But, I can feel it. It is really painful. Sorta like a bad bruise. I can feel it some when I turn my head. IF I push on it it hurts real bad. I am terrified. I am a naturally easily scared person. I have heard that if you are sick than something like this could happen , but I haven't been sick. I just noticed it today. Should I see a doctor , or wait and see if it goes away? Has anyone experienced this before?

i am a pediatric nurse and part of the territory is being around sick kids all the time. if i get a bug from one of the kids and get really sick then my lymph node in that same area gets big too. it is also painful to touch. along your jaw line and in your neck are lots of lymph nodes. they are kinda home base for the army men cells in your body that fight off infection. sometimes though they can get big and sore even if your arent sick. that just means that your body is doing a good job fighting off the germs it comes in contact with. do you have any more large bumps in your groin or under your arms? if you have a lot of them or it is bigger than a small marble then you need to be concerned and get it checked out by a doctor. if it is just the one small one....keep and eye on it and go to the doctor if it changes. :)

It could be a lymph node that is swollen. Your body may be fighting off an infection.

It's most likely a swollen gland. You have dozens of glands all over your body, and quite a few in your neck area. Usually when the glands you are talking about swell its a sign of an infection so just go to a doctor if it doesn't go down in the next couple of days and he should put you on antibiotics.

Yes, it sounds like a swollen lymph node. I have one along my hairline, but I've had it for years. It comes up, gets really painful, and then disappears for a while, but it always comes back. So you should see a doctor instead of just waiting for it to go away.

It's definitely a sign of your body fighting something. Could be nothing. If you get no other symptoms and it doesn't start to go away in 3 days see your doctor. But don't panic- it's probably nothing major.

Not to put you at ease, but my 25yrold had this and she said it didn't hurt, anyway doc said it was just a cyst no worry. If yours hurts i'd put a warm pact on it and ask doc to check it.
