Done My Own (Blonde(s) And Brown(s) ) And Helped Others With Theirs. It Worked Just Fine For The Most Part. People Run Into Trouble By Expecting Too Much From The Dye Process Or By Not Allowing It To Work Long Enough. (Or Too Long) And Applying The Product Wrong Or Not Enough Product.
Some Basic Rules:
1) DON'T Try to Go More Than Two Shades (Levels) Lighter
2) DON'T Expect To Completely Change Your Natural Tone (RED To ASH Or Vice Versa)
3) DO Have Enough Color To SATURATE Your Hair (Buy TWO KITS If Your Hair Is Long And/Or Thick)
4) DO Check The Timing CAREFULLY (If You Are Lightening Give It An Extra 10mins - No More. To Work)
5) If You Don't Get the Result You Want The First Time. Wait A Week And Try Again With The Same Shade/Brand.
6) If Your Still Not The Shade You Want. Check The Manufactures Website Or Call Their Color Hotline
Remember, Recoloring Too Frequently Will Only Damage Your Hair And Irritate Your Scalp. Making A Good Color Job LESS Likely.
Some Good Kits For Home Use:
For BOLD BRILLIANT COLOR: L'Oreal FERIA™ Or CLAIROL HERBAL ESSENCES™
For HIGH LIFT (BLONDING): L'Oreal Les BLONDESMES (Preference Or Excelence) CLAIROL NICE N' EASY Summer Blondes™ SB1 Or SB2
For RICH Natural Color: CLAIROL HYDRIENCE™ Or L'Oreal Excelence™
For GENTLE CONDITIONING COLOR L'Oreal Natural Match™ REVLON ColorSilk™ CLAIROL Balsam Color@ (Liquid Or Creme)
For NO-LIFT GLOSSY COLOR: CLAIROL Natural Instincts™ Or L'Oreal CASTING™
Good Luck!

Yep. Many times.
I've had many colors:
- permanent dye: several shades of red, purple, dark brown (those 3 - all of my hair), blonde (highlights)
(And of course, none of those were at the same time, lol)
- semi-permanent dye or the kind that comes out in 1 or 2 washes: pretty much every color imaginable
I've never been disappointed, and every time it's turned out the way I wanted it to. Even though I have dyed my hair many times, right now I'm taking a break (mostly because of financial reasons... plus, I like my natural hair color, and I haven't seen it for a few years, lol.). Maybe I'll go back to dying my hair in a few years. I've had it done professionally and I've done it myself a few times. I prefer to get it done professionally, though. From what I can remember of the last time I dyed my hair myself, Loreal worked pretty well.
And in a side note to anyone that says dye ruins your hair: Trust me, it doesn't do any harm! As many times as I've dyed my hair, if anything happened, my hair felt and looked *more* healthy than it is naturally (And, I have to say, my hair is pretty great naturally, lol). =)
And hair dye does *not* cause cancer!

I get mine professionally done. If you can find a salon with an affordable price, it's really worth it to have someone do it for you: at a better angle, objective view of your hair, etc.
I dye mine reddish brown and put 2 colors of highlights back in. Last time it was a really dark brown (almost black) and a lighter brown. This gives your hair dimension and makes it look more natural.
I love it, and I'll keep going back. My only disaster was when I tried to do it myself. Not that it can't be done, but I'm too much of a perfectionist to put up with my own inexperience. ; )

I've dyed mine several different colors from blonde to red to almost black. It has almost always turned out the way I wanted it to and I've only had one that I didn't like. I just dyed over it with a similar color. I've gotten it professionally done in the past, but it gets pretty expensive. I now dye it myself every 4 to 6 weeks and I've never gotten more compliments on it. I use Loreal Feria dye in light auburn black right now and I've also used other colors. I've also used Loreal Colour Expert with the solid color dye and highlights in one kit. That also comes out beautiful.

Yes, three times.
First time:
-Red (like fire engine red)
-After the read started to fade, it turned a disgusting orange.
-In the beginning it wasn't a disaster.
-I did that color once more. I won't do that color again.
-At-home application
2nd time
-Dark red highlight
-They turned out darker than I wanted.
-It wasn't a disaster though.
-I would do it again, but lighter.
-At-home application.
3rd time:
-A dark auburn type of color
-It turned out pretty good.
-It was not a disaster
-I would definately do it again
-At-home application
-The best, in my opinion, is Clairol Natural Instincts. The color I used was 28B Roasted Chestnut-Dark Warm Brown.

Many times. My hair was naturally blonde and I dyed it Dark Red. Then it turned orange and took forever to turn blonde again. Then I dyed it Brown from a box (Herbal Esscenses or something) and it turned Grey!! Now I get it professionally done and its ok. If u do do it from a box, Loreal is good.

a lot of this depends on what type of hair you have, and what color. i would experiment with wash outs first to figure out what you want exactly. if you are black, or jewish, or hispanic with curly or coarse hair you should proably purchase an ethnic product.... i am black and latina and i have very dark brown curly hair. i dyed it a copper color and i like it a lot. i also have a medium brown skin tone. skin tone should be a factor in what color you dye your hair as well; don't dye your hair a color that is too close to your complexion....
hope that helps some

I have dyed my own hair forever-I'm in the business- I mix 2 differnt colors together by Wella- it only takes 10 minutes- no blowerdryer either and it is perfect! Go to Sally's Beauty Supply and check out the selection- they will let you know exactly what you need!

I've been dying my hair since 6th grade! I can't even remember my natural color! I've been a lot of different colors! Platinum blonde, dark brown, pink, red, orange and green... Some unintentionally.
If you try to go from blonde to dark brown, do it in stages. If you just plunk dark brown on you'll end up with green tinted hair. Sort of like you've got mold lol
Don't go from too dark to too light either, you'll end up with a brassy orange tint.
Pay attention to ash versus warm/golden and naturals! I look just AWFUL in anything with the word ash in it.
Don't dye your hair four times in one day trying to get of the green tint... the end ofyour hair will turn to MUSH. Like spaghetti in your hands!!
If a color is too intense I wash it a couple times in dawn dishwashing soap to fade it.
REDS FADE FAST!
Blondes require a lot of upkeep unless you like the look of roots.
Have a friend spot check your head for missed spots. Trust me the cheetah look is out.
Immediately remove hair dye from your skin!!! Unless you like to scrub your skin raw in a panic ten minutes before your date arrives.
I have pretty thick hair so when it does fall out, I don't panic I've got enough to keep me looking good! Usually my hair is softer and has a more "full" and bouncy look to it.
I always do it myself and I use Revlon's Colorsilk. Its the cheapest brand at my local Wal Mart! I'm always able to fix any snafus myself and the ONE TIME I got my hair done at a salon it turned out HORRIBLE.
$85 for I swear to you The Fifth Element orange hair. And she kept SWEARING she saw no orange. It was outrageous lol
And I don't attempt highlights. Ever. Tried. FIVE TIMES in my life and NEVER have they worked out right.
Good luck and welcome to the world of hair color! It's exciting isn't it!?
