That's an excellent observation. I hadn't really considered that. I believe it's largely true.
The most recent tactics of religion seem to be 1.) Denying science outright, 2.) Countering the science with its own comical version of "science", 3.) Trying desperately to integrate their superstitions into the legitimate science to make them seem more credible.
Of course, none of those actually work. But combined with the old standby carrot/stick conditioning of Heaven and Hell, they seem to be sufficient to keep the masses subservient. For now.

No. We've reached the point where most religions can coexist with science, but a few holdouts are fighting tooth and nail to stay in the Dark Ages. After Kitzmiller v. Dover, it is a laugh as they grow ever bolder out of desperation. Because they can enforce ignorance upon their children, there will be another generation, but the days of the Literal Biblical Creationist are numbered. Their apologists, such as the Gap Theory Creationists, are a symptom of the decline and will do little to change the inevitable slide into reality.

No. Fundamentalism is a perversion of religion, and it will always have its adherents, regardless of the religion. What they fail to realize though, is the joke is on them. Usually, they are provinicial, and poorly educated. The simple fact that they miss is that thier religious doctrine is not meant to be read literally. I don't care what religion we are referring to (except Mormonism) the holy literature always has more than one meaning, and more than one layer. The lay people are not expected to be initiated into the esoteric knowledge contained therein, nor are the majority of the clergy for that matter.
So really its not even these people's faults. The message has been difused so much, and they are ignorant of the vast history and theological debates of their very own religion.
So religion and science can easily co-exist. Ask Darwin and Einstein both. But there is never room for fundamentalists who miss the entire message to begin with. Ignorance is bliss however.

Yes, and it's scary as hell. Their "faith" is alleged to be founded on the teachings of Jesus Christ, but their behavior shows that they know little or nothing of his world view. Sometimes I think that no one know less about Jesus than Christians.

You'd be surprised how little evolution comes up at my church... it never does.
We have more important things to talk about - science will come around ;)
