You can use the old fashioned TV antenae for atop your house?

If you have an HDTV with a digital tuner, you can pick up local broadcast HD TV channels. If your TV is HDTV ready, it does not have a digital tuner in it and you have to get a standalone digital tuner to pick up the broadcast HDTV sgnals.

The type of antenna you use may or may not make a difference. If you have strong TV signals in the air, an old standard TV antenna may work. If not, the newer HD antennas are designed to be very sensitive to the frequencies on which digital channels are broadcast.

There are a few hd channels you can pick up with the old fashion 'rabbit ears'. We don't have cable and we get a few local and news channels.

Yes. But they are local HD channels ony. You still need a provider for those premium HD channels.
