I want to get a new job when I graduate in May. I've got a full time job now and it's good but it's not in my field and it's pretty much a dead end. Ideally I want to leave my current job in June and start a new one in August/September so I can have a summer vacation. Would I be better off looking for a job now and trying to negotiate terms like this, or should I just wait until the summer? I don't want to have to spend my whole summer break searching for a job because I don't have one lined up...

You can start applying now if you wanted to. The important thing is to be up front and honest at the interview that you can only start in September.

You have nothing to lose. If they need someone right away, thats fair enough but if they can wait and they like you, they might just save the position for you.

It might also get you in their good books for future positions.

Take the time now to really write a bang up resume. Write three different versions -- a chronological based, experience based and education based. Begin researching companies you may want to work for and can target. Just get as prepared as possible. But, don't expect to find a job right away. You might need to spend the summer looking for a job.

I would start doing research, and compile a list of people and companies to write to, but don't start sending the letters until about April 1, 2008.

Welcome to the real world. you will no longer get summer break nor will a company hold a position so a future immature employee can have the summer off.
