Chris Simon has been suspended for some 30 games which means he won't play again 'til later on in the season. What he did was dispicable. People are saying it's the longest suspension in NHL history. That isn't accurate. About 30 decades ago, a player was suspended for LIFE. What some of these players are doing on the ice not only draw negative feelings toward themselves, what they do is ILLEGAL. Some of them, like Tod Bertuzzi should be charged criminally. Simon definitely has issues, and until such time as he can prove that he's fit to play properly without violence and without causing personal injury to another player, he should be suspended indefinitely. If violent behaviour isn't curtailed, it will take a player being killed before the NHL does something strongly to stop it. I hope this never happens.
Tod Bertuzzi cost another player his career...that's just the tip of the iceberg. Enough..I've vented now.

For those of you who say 30 decades is 300 years, you need to bone up on your knowledge. A decade consists of TEN years, therefore, 3 decades ago =30 years. 300 years would consists of 3 CENTURIES.
Zam, if you had your way, people would literally get away with murder. Deliberately injuring another player is unforgiveable. If you or I were another Mark Bell (the Leaf player who goes to jail at the end of the season), we wouldn't get the chance to play our season prior to the jail sentence. The man gets to play hockey, make his millions, then will serve his sentence.
I'm glad the majority of you agree that Simon should be turfed...permanently, never mind waiting 'til he has free-agent status, is 37 years old. and perhaps no one will want him. Tod Bertuzzi said if he didn't hit that other player, the coach would have been after him. Give me a flipin' break!!!!!! The coach wouldn't go to jail;, but the player WILL. Before we know it, some funeral director will gain another customer.

By the way Mich...Ruutu may not have been injured when Simon stepped on his foot, but the intent was there. Sharp skate blades could very easily have penetrated Ruutu's skate.
As for the law poking it's nose in...I hope it happens more often; but then again I may be biased..because I have strong affiliations with a Police Service. There is no such thing as legal assault causing bodily harm.

Rich you said it too...3 decades =300 years. It boggles the mind that a few of you think a decade is comprised of 100 years. The dictionary says.."A decade is a set of group of TEN, comonly a period of 10 years in Contemporary English or a period of 10 days in the French Revolutionary calendar. In contemporary English, the word can be used to specifiy a general period of ten years, e.g. "The last decade was characterized by the rise of the internet".
Sooo..approx 3 DECADES ago a player was banned for life because he hit a ref.
I think some of you need to return to class to brush up on your terminology.
So..I'll pick a winner who knows that 300 years ago is 3 CENTURIES. lol lol

Ok Ben..you get the points. You mentioned the suspension of 1927. That's 5 decades ago, or 50 years ago., or for those others, 1/2 century. So, Simon has not received the longest suspension in history. 30 games is not a life-long ban. I can't wait for these players to be permanently suspended. They're overpaid as it is., so hopefully they've invested wisely. If it were you or I, we wouldn't have nearly the number of chances they've been given.

1927 Stanley Cup Bostons Billy Coutu was banned for life for smashing referee Gerry LaFlamme in the face.
Although i think Simon should have got 2season banns as he is a repeat offender.

I am a nearly life-long (I was 6 in 1972) die-hard Isles fan. WIth that said, my patience with Chris Simon has run thin. It is all a moot point anyway. After 30 games away, Simon will finish out the season with the Isles and then his career will end quietly.
Charles Wang and Ted Nolan are both very loyal people, and Chris Simon has benefitted greatly from that. All parties involved are doing the right thing here. Solely due to loyalty, Nolan will find a place for Simon to return, even if the Isles are in the thick of a playoff hunt. After that, since he will be a free agent and 37 years old, no one will take him and his problems on. His game has fallen greatly from last year anyway (10 goals, +7 rating).
Nevertheless, this is the longest suspension in league history, it is warranted, it will be served, Simon will return, then he will fade away. Charles Wang will find some paid position for him within the organization, and he will do a good job there.

May I suggest tennis, might be more your game.
He screwed up, he is being punished and will probably never play another game. Maybe we should look into putting Chris Simon in jail? How about castration? Maybe lethal injection for Bertuzzi? Would that do it for you?
Hockey has ALWAYS been a game of extreme emotion and violence, the players who play are well aware of what they are getting into. By no means do I condone such acts, but I hate when whiners try and turn it into ballet. The new rules are doing a well enough job with that as it is.
I don't justify these actions, but come on, they are being dealt with accordingly, what more do you want? A 30 game suspension and what will more than likely result in the end of his career, as it did for Mcsorley is suitable for me.
BTW- 30 decades ago would be 300 years, about a 100 years before George Vancouver even started exploring western Canada. If you are aware of a lifetime suspension from hockey back then, I would love to hear about it.
****First off, 1 decade=10 years thus 30 decades=300 years. Its SIMPLE MATH, and they were your words EXACTLY. Read them again Einstein. Even if you meant 30 years ago, you still have NO clue what you are talking about. There were no lifetime bans in the 70's, I was there. So it is in fact YOU who need to "bone up on yo knowledge." Whatever the hell that means.
http://proicehockey.about.com/cs/history/a/nhl_suspensions.htm
****Secondly, you clearly never played the game. Second year of college I was deliberately kneed resulting in a spiral fracture of my right femur. I was cross-checked in the face in junior and had my jaw broken. I think I have just as much of a reason as anybody to be angry about things like this. Do I think those guys should have been put in jail? Ridiculous! Its a sport, take a day off and stop comparing it to life on the street, its not.
Also, by saying that I dont think Chris Simon deserves jail time, I think people should get away with murder??? If we are going to exaggerate like that, then you probably would like to see anybody who commits a major penalty have to leave the arena in cuffs. Lets put more people in jail, always a good solution for a cop.
It amazes me the way you people crawl out of the woodwork into the hockey section whenever something like this happens and pretend to know what the hell you are talking about. Priceless. I hope you get tickets to a figure skating event for Christmas, I think you would fit in much better there.

I think your comparisons are a bit off. First, Bertuzzi was charged and pleaded guilty to assault. Now on to Chris Simon. I am really torn on this, as I like (liked?) him. Did you see his previous attack that got him a 25 game suspension? A blatant, 2 handed baseball swing type, slash to the face. I suggest you watch it on you-tube. Chris in this incident and the last incident could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He's using weapons in sharp skates and his stick and he is only lucky that he didn't end someone's career, because both attacks could have. (I say could be charged, not should, I would rather what happens in the NHL, stays in the NHL, and isn't a police matter. But to compare the attacks on a legal front, Chris is using weapons.) It does not take much to cause deadly cuts with an ice skate. Given the problems in concussions and stuff, the league does NOT want to start having skate incidences. Very different than a gloved fist punch to a guy wearing a helmet.

Have yet to see the incident -- but even among goons and fighters and rough guys in hockey, using the skates of off limits. People can get killed that way, easily.
I don't know that much about Simon, either, since he is an Eastern Conferencer.
30 is a lot, but I think anything intentional with a skate should be at least a year. At least.
And yeah - you did say 30 deacades, which is 300 years.

I have to agree with bewerefan here. Wang and Nolan will see that Simon is OK. The last thing the league wants is for the law to poke it's nose into what it sees as it's business. Given that Rutuu didn't even miss a shift, 30 games seems appropriate to me.

OF COURSE HE SHOULD!! He has been suspended 8 times before this and this suspension is breaking the longest suspension record ever. The record previously set by HIMSELF! I'm all for rough play and hard hits, but come on, that's just dirty and wrong.

30 decades is 300 years...i don't think the NHL was around then. How long did they suspend that guy from the Capitals who mashed Pierre Turgeon after a goal in the playoffs that one year, damn I can't remember the guys name, was it 25 games? I know it was a lot.
Yeah...Dale Hunter...sheesh...can't believe I forgot that. Thanks bro.
