When I was looking for it many years ago, I asked at the service desk. It turned out that since it cost so much they kept it at the service desk for safe keeping....

This may help....

Take note that there are several varieties of saffron. You can't substitute the Indian for the Italian...but you could -- if you had to -- substitute Italian and Spanish.

At my grocery store, fancy spices are not with the other spices. They're in the produce area. If you just looked, but didn't ask, I would ask.

I usually get saffron at an Italian grocery store, but the only ones I know are in St. Louis. You can buy it all over the place in Brooklyn.

Kroger in my neck of the woods has Saffron, but then we have a large Indian, middle eastern and north African population.

Saffron is very expensive but you won't need to use much of it. Indian and middle eastern grocery stores will carry it--they will probably have a decent price and/or let you buy only the amount that you need. Also grocery stores in upscale neighborhoods will carry it.

If you only need it for color--a small amount of tumeric is a decent substitute, but there is nothing that can substitute for the taste of saffron

Most gourmet food stores or spice stores carry it, I know Byrlies here in the Twin Cities where I am carries it but for a few threads its like 12$ so if a recipe calls for a tablespoon your gonna be spending alot unless you can find an alternate spice to use.

Any really good grocer should have it, or an Indian grocer, or Williams Sonoma. It's costly, but there is no substitute for it when it's called for in a recipe.
