I remember as a child my mom using these tiny little silver balls or beads when decorating cakes. They looked exactly like a silver BB, but maybe a bit smaller. What are they called and are they edible or simply for decoration?

They're called "silver dragées" (some just say "silver balls"). I just bought a couple packets (2 different sizes) this evening, to use on Christmas cookies. I've seen them in gold, too. And yes, they're edible, made of sugar.

Just look for them at the supermarket where they have the colored sugars and sprinkles, cake decorations, vanilla, etc.

They're called dragees, but most of the time calling them 'silver balls' will get you what you want! Most grocery stores, such as Safeway, have them in the baking aisle, with cake decorations. They usually come in a little plastic tube. Yes, they're edible, just made of sugar.

Sur La Table, a French specialty cooking store, has ALL sorts of cooking supplies, and it's always at a very cheap price. They have the MOST amazing stuff, things I didn't even know existed. If your not lucky enough to live near one, that's okay. They have a website in which I will link in the source box. Enjoy!

I don't know what they are called besides silver balls....

If I were you though and since these things are so small, I would get a package of pre-made Fondant(or make your own Marshmallow Fondant, Its only marshmallows, water and powdered sugar) and make your own...this way you can color them yourself by using Luster Dust, Which is available in numerous colors...this way you aren't limited to Silver or Gold, as thats whats available in stores

I am not sure what they are called, but I have seen them in the baking section of the grocery store with the sprinkles. It should tell you on the container if it is edible.

They are edible. I wish I could remember what they are called. A place like Michaels would probably have them. Most supermarkets have them too.

They are called dragees and I think they are only good for breaking ones teeth on.
But they are edible.

Please, use a bit of common sence and do some research before eating wierd silver stuff. Within 5 min of searching on Google.com, I found this information.

1) "Dragees (pronounced "Dra-jeys") are those little metallic balls that we all remember on holiday cookies. They are safe to eat, but should be removed before serving because of the real metal coating."

2) "FDA has recommended that they are for decorative use only, and they are technically not a food item."

3) "*Please note* Dragees have been banned in the state of California and it is illegal to ship them there."

If its has: some unknown real metal in it (1), and it is been called "not a food item" by the FDA (2), and its not safe in California(3)...I'm not eating it.
You can. Go for it.
