I think you're on the right track. If they were truly atheist they wouldn't bash God and talk about him as much.

Keep going, because that was almost an English sentence.

The short answer is because many people who DO claim to believe in God are insane, and do insane things based on their insane beliefs. The classic case in point would be 9/11 - but of course religious insanity is hardly confined to Islam.

You can just flip the usual rhetoric: Christians are constantly annoying people about Jesus because they're trying to "save souls." Well, maybe atheists are trying to make "religious" people wake up and realize that Santa and Jesus are really the same guy.

I think new atheists ask these questions often. They are still insecure with how to deal with the idea of death etc. I think many times people do WANT to believe in God at some point because things are easier when all sins are forgiven and our loved ones all live on forever.

However, once you become more comfortable in your beliefs you don't have as great a need to pester those that feel differently.

The God phenomena is amazing to witness. No matter how many G/gods have earned their rightful place in mythology (all of them), people continue worship them. G/gods and religions are an integral part of human culture. We can learn a lot from studying how ancient people worshiped and how their customs and rituals are still affecting humanity today.

It's a living drama that is fascinating to watch.

Because theists constantly try to govern MY life based upon the unknowable.

Examples:

Right to die
stem cells
abortion
gay marriage

I'm a theists... but some of us really piss me off. You can't blame atheists for that!

We ask because we find it ridiculous that so many believe the myths. That and said beliefs affect out daily lives.

We do not ask because we in any way want to believe in any of it. That's just something people who can't imagine not believing make up to make themselves feel better about their beliefs.

Our obsession is with telling the truth. We concern ourselves with those who claim belief with absolutely nothing to fortify it except a book full of myths and metaphor. We simply choose to inform the misinformed.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Being a part of the Anime' Yakuza, I'm naturally "drawn" to Fantasy Beings.

Mostly.

(Atheists: You need to check out Dutchess's video (First entry in this "Answers" column). DAMN good AND applicable to Us.)

We're curious. It's mind-boggling to us that people who would not believe in unicorns, leprechauns, or lucky rabbit's feet would worship a deity.

We are equally baffled by people that deny evolution (not saying you are one of these), but have no problem with gravity or electricity.

The fascination to me is how are these lines being drawn?
