There are no prophets today except New Testament prophets, who do not bring new revelation beyond God's final revelation - the Lord Jesus Christ:
"God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,"
Hebrews 1:1-3

They don't. They come regularly.
However, many of those called as prophets won't recognize or exercise their calling.
It could be embarrassing, you might stand out, people would say you are crazy, and so forth. (All of these are true just as with prophets of old and as some of these Yahoo Answers will show).
They're out there but not following their calling. They lack faith and the backbone to lay down their own lives for what God has called them to do.
Even if they did, most people would not believe them--again as it was with the prophets of old.

There have been no prophets since the apostles were killed off and the church slid into apostasy. That is, there have been no prophets up until 1830, when God called a latter-day prophet to restore the truth to the earth again.

God is not working thru the prophetic program today. He changed programs when He SET ASIDE the Nation Israel two thousand years ago.
Today, we are in the dispensation of the Grace of God, otherwise known as "the preaching of Jesus Christ ACCORDING TO THE REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY..." Rom. 16:25
God has given His latest information specifically TO and ABOUT the church which is His Body, to OUR apostle, Paul. That information is found in Romans thru Philemon.
God declares His Word complete with the letters of Paul who is Gods appointed spokesman in this age of Grace.
So, prophets are no longer operating today, but WILL again in the future when God resumes His program with the Nation Israel.

they don't
There are thousands of them claiming to have direct access to god right now.
The big difference is that some prophets can write, and a few years after they are dead and gone, and the people who actually knew them are dead and gone, those writings become regarded as actual accounts, instead of ridiculed ramblings of crazy people.
If you read accounts of Elijah, you can see that he wasn't highly regarded by the population at the time. He was picked on by teenagers, and hunted by kings for his statements. He lived life as a hermit and stole food from birds.
But His story was documented, and now that there is no one left to dispute his claims of teenage eating she bears and food delivery ravens, people assume that it was a miraculous time.
beta highlights the point. Joseph smith and all those around him are dead and gone, so it is quite easy to ignore writings about his life, and believe in faith that the book of mormon was inspired by God.
If you are going to believe that Isaiah was a prophet, then why not Joseph Smith?

Because God doesn't just call an average "joe" to be a prophet. Second, many people are called by God. Not all of them answer.
