I have been having mouth pain that hurts one entire side of my mouth. Advil and Orjel didn't touch the pain. Cold packs were helping for a bit, but then stopped. I started using a hot compress but it didn't help much either. I saw the dentist today and he says the teeth are fine and there are no abcesses. He thinks it could be inflammed gums. His suggestion was to rinse with Listerine a few times a day and that should take care of it in a few days. He also gave me Tylenol3 for the pain in the meantime.

Does this seem about right? Anyone else go through this? This seems like SO MUCH pain for a little inflammed tissue.

Does it hurt to brush your teeth? It actually feels better

To floss? No

Are the teeth sensitive to hot and/ or cold? Cold, swishing warm water can make it feel better for a bit.

Biting pressure? I can't eat on that side.

Is the pain there all day long or just certain times? All day, but can go away in an instance, then come back just as severe.

Does it wake you up? Yes, and I can't sleep from the pain

Would you describe it as sharp or dull and throbbing? sharp, from the front teeth all the way to the back one one side

Is it always concentrated all over the mouth, or does it ever localize? When I take the Advil, it can eas the pain, but I still feel pain in my back 2 teeth

My dentist took an xray of my last 2 teeth and said there was nothing there to show reason for pain. My last tooth actually has had a root canal and has a crown.

I'm assuming there's no doubt that your gums are inflamed. But the magnitude of your pain doesn't sound quite right. And if your gums are inflamed Listerine may well be irritating--and as a disinfectant it's mediocre.
Does it hurt to brush your teeth? To floss? You should be doing these thoroughly of course, but if you can do it without exacerbating the pain I'm thinking it's something other than the gums.

These are the kind of questions the dentist should ask to attempt to get a handle on what's causing the pain.

Inflamed gums can be so painful! I have a suggestion. Go to WalMart and get the Equate brand of Gly-Oxide (it's a small bottle). Put 10 drops in mouth and swish around for two minutes. It will bubble up and fill your mouth. Then spit it out but don't rinse! About 3 or 4 times a day and if it's inflamed gums, it will get better very soon.
And for the time being, don't use toothpaste; instead mix baking soda and salt and brush your teeth very gently with this. This is healing and cleans the mouth well.
If you can't get the drops, pour a bit of hydrogen peroxide in a spoon and swish that around instead. It's very healing.
Can't have a sore mouth on Christmas now can you? All that good food needs a healthy mouth. Merry Christmas!

Sore Inflamed Gums

It probably is inflamed gums and that can really cause some major pain in your mouth. Something else you can do that will help is swish warm salty water around in your mouth instead of the Listerine. That stuff will burn like mad in your mouth! You can also do the same thing with peroxide, just make sure you spit it all out and don't swallow any of it. The peroxide will heal your mouth faster than anything else you can use. The pills he gave you won't do anything much except get you high or maybe make you sick at your stomach.

Hi, i'm having the exact same pain! I don't know what to do. I've had an ice pack on my mouth for five days now and it hasn't gotten better! My dentist said those same things. How did you stop it? How long did it take to go away? tylenol and advil has not helped at all and its ruining my spring break! Anything you share about your expirience and how you fixed this problem would be really helpful, thanks!
