use the stock in place of water, toss in your favorite veggies and meats, season to taste with your favorite spices and seasonings, bring to a boil, then turn temp to low and simmer. Allow the liquid to cook down a bit.
If you want a thick broth, ladle about a 1/2 of cup of hot broth into a cup and add a little bit (about 1 teaspoon) of cornstarch to the cup and mix until it is completely dissolved, then add the contents of the cup back into your soup, mix well and let simmer until it thickens up. If it isn't thick enough for you, keep adding small amounts of cornstarch until it is as thick as you want it. You can substitute all purpose flour and a little oil or butter (as in a roux) for the cornstarch if you want--with cornstarch the broth will stay fairly translucent, with flour it will be opaque.
as to how much broth: figure about 1 1/2 cups of broth per serving (you are going to cook the liquid down). As to the rest of the ingredients, as much or as little as you want just make sure when you start cooking that the liquid covers the other ingredients.
have fun!

you can buy soup bases in 1 lb jars in the grocery store. these are similar to the boulion but of a higher quality. the best way is to boil a whole chicken for an hour remove the chicken and allow to cool so you can remove the meat. add chopped onions celery and carrots to the broth cook until tender add the chicken back in add cooked noodles or rice to the broth if desired. use the chicken base to taste other spices you can add are parsley flakes, poultry seasoning, pepper, garlic, dill weed. This is a beginners recipe. classic recipes are prepared differently but this should get you started.
