Personally, I think you should be proud of the fact that you're about to be a grandparent and accept whatever name is given be it "Granny" or "Nana".

Since when do the words "Grandma, Granny, or Grandmother" connote with being old? There are plenty of 40-year-old grandparents today. Are they considered old? I think Grandma is perfectly suitable. And last time I checked, you can't choose a nick-name. It's given to you.

I am sorry so many people have told you that you should enjoy being called "grandma." I dont know where people get the gall to tell others what to like and not like.
Read "Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates" by Tom Robbins. (Or you really don't have to read it to see my point. Though it is a good book.) The main character's grandmother refused to be called grandma or anything like it, and demanded to be called Maestra instead. It's an option.

When I was little and couldn't pronounce names, all I could get out was Mamaw and Pop-Pop and Mimi and Pop-Pop. They stuck, and since I'm the oldest on one side and the third oldest on the other, my sister and all of my younger cousins call them that too. My Mimi loved it, she hated being called Grandma by my two older cousins. I am 24 and have never called my grandparents anything but.

By the way, my husband's grandma is Nana.

My friend's mom tried this for the same reasons. But whenever someone else was around, she got called grandma in front of the boys. Guess what they call her? Ultimately you are going to get called whatever your children refer to you as in front of the kids, and if they want you to be grandma, guess what? You will be.

Why don't you just let your grandkids pick your name when they're old enough to talk? It's what we did in my family. My sister and I call our maternal grandmother "dobbs" (something my sister made up when she was 2), my paternal grandmother "mimi" and my sons (ages 3 and 2) call my mom "meena." Have no idea where it came from, but when my 3 year old turned 2, he started calling my mom meena. :)

A girl I work with didn't either, she has her grandson calling her Mom-Mom.

But the child will decide what to call you!!! Another girl I know, her kids call her mom "Gommy". A lot of people have taken to calling her Gommy!

When your little grandbaby is old enough to say "Grandma" or some form of it, its going to be the most precious, heart-warming thing you've ever heard and you won't mind it then.
