I want nothing to do with digital audio. All my equipment is top-quality vacuum-tube stuff from the sixties, and I think the quality of sound reproduction is superb. I firmly believe that good vinyl played on excellent analog equipment is far superior to anything digital. I have never owned a CD player and have only a vague idea of what an iPod is. Friends say I 'm a little nuts. Am I?

Some people prefer analog because it's a truer reproduction of the analog signal. CDs use a digital sampling rate of 50kHz. Otherwise, they would not be able to fit any more than a song or two on a CD. So, the higher frequencies are practically square waves. And, with high-end amplification and speakers, a true audiophile can hear this difference.

However, with these devices that let you transfer your albums and cassettes to your computer, you can make use much higher sampling rates that will give you greater fidelity than CDs.

Personally, I love the sound of tube amplifiers and some of the esoteric speaker systems out there. But, unless you're playing a vinyl album for the first time on an insanely expensive turntable, I would prefer to call up a song file on my computer or a CD to play the kind of music I listen to.

lol. Most people growing up these days only know digital... Many people think that analog has a "warmer" sound... in most cases i would have to agree.

there are a few negatives to analog...

Space: you have to keep all those albums somewhere

Preservation: the more you listen, the more wear on the records... not to mention keeping out of the sun and away from heat.

Time: digging through crates, finding a song

I've been djing for over 9 years i started on turntables, and still use turntables...

when i travel i take my record bag with me as a carry-on and without fail every time the checker looks at me like "people still use records?!?!"

i always enjoyed vinyl more than Cd's, what you can do is use technology to your advantage....

it takes a lot of time but you can record albums/songs to your computer using turntables and a sound card or turntables with built in USB cables... record at the highest quality and you'll have the best of both worlds (and you can keep all the clicks and pops if you want to :)

Then you can have a back up of all your albums and you can put them on an ipod and take them where ever you want to go (without the back pain of lugging crates around)

You are a dying breed. Most people have never even heard analog audio.

This has been argued ad nauseum, only an audiophile can tell the difference but I do agree, analog is better. The only problem with analog is the medium used to record it, highly inferior and degrades with use, so it's a bit of a trade-off.

I still gots me plastic, about 200 of 'em. :-)

Yes. But, that's okay. I prefer digital over analog--but that's my preference.

Where do you find tubes and styli?
