I went with regular with the intent of trying bib shorts. That was long ago and I still haven't tried the bibs cause the regular work for me.
Edit: I never considered the nature breaks....
I mean you would have to unshoulder the suspenders, as in removing a jersey? I will stick to regular riding shorts, I think.

There are goods and bads to each type of short.
Regular shorts have to have a tight waist band to keep them in place. They tend to be tighter all around to help keep them in place. Despite the tight waist band and tighter over all fit, I still find most tend to slide down some. As you can visualize, when pants slide down and you are bending over the handlebars you may expose parts of your anatomy that people may make cracks about. They are much less expensive than bibs. They are also much easier to get into and out of
Since bib shorts are supported by the shoulder straps, they tend to be much less tight and more comfortable. Unfortunately, bibs are way more expensive. Depending on how they are constructed, in chilly weather bibs may tend to chafe your nipples. They are also a bear when nature calls. All in all, though, I much prefer bibs to regular shorts.
Hope this helps.

I am a convert to Bibs, I find them far better than regular shorts, The natural breaks do pose a problem though!!!!!!
If you are new to cycling, stick with regular shorts for now, buy a set of Bibs later and see how you get on with them.

I doesn't matter really. If I had to say - get regular shorts. Why? Because if you don't really take to the sport they are cheaper than bibs. If you do end up riding a lot. You can always use more than one pair.

Bibs are definitely more comfortable, answering the "call of nature" in them is their only downfall. Most off the mid-priced manufacturers only add $10-20 on for bibs vs. shorts, that's not exorbitant. If you're just riding shorter distances (<90 minutes) it probably doesn't make too much difference. For longer rides, every bit of comfort you can add helps.

The two most common objections to bib shorts:
1. Complicates matters for bathroom breaks
2. Very strange tan lines in the summer.

I have to go with bibs because they are more comfortable than regular. But man are they expensive! Or maybe I'm just cheap...
