File a late return for last year, and a current return for this year....on time, by April 15.
If you owe no taxes for last year, no problem, otherwise, penalties and interest.

Just file the return. If you have a refund, no problem. You can't file your 2007 return until Jan 1.

2006 forms and instructions can be downloaded from the IRS website. You should file your 2006 return ASAP.
The IRS will not begin processing 2007 returns until 1-14-08. That date may be delayed if congress passes AMT legislation.

If you have a refund from last year, don't sweat it. The government doesn't care how late it is if they owe you money. If it's the other way around, get down on your knees and beg for forgiveness. You'll owe penalties up the wazoo as well as interest charges. Don't put it off, though. It doesn't get any better the longer you wait.

On the irs.gov website, here's the trick to getting to last year's forms.
Use the search box in the upper right corner and type in 2006.
This will give a link to all 2006 forms, instructions and publications.
Pull up what you need. You can type on them, then print or print and then handwrite them. Either way, you mail it in.

What you do is file it. And prepare to pay a penalty for late filing.

As long as you don't owe any taxes, you should be fine. Just get them filed.
