Do you believe in global warming or not? Why or why not?
NOTE: This is a poll, and only a poll. Please be considerate to other people's opinions, and feel free to write your own thoughts on the subject. (This is for my sociology project over winter break.) Thanks!

Yes I do
The graph is at http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/science/recenttc_triad.html

What is not so clear is the cause so perhaps the question should have been "Do you believe in Anthropogenic Global Warming?" - and you would have one new word for your project.

I think the results from the 14 different climate models and the simulation runs are supportive and so my answer is yes but there are still some unresolved issues - it would be amazing if there weren't

I would prefer to hold a skeptical and optimistic view, but the only papers that I find credible are the ones suggesting a massive challenge ahead, so yes, I believe the earth is warming.

The deeper I dig, the more dirt I find on the processes and organizations driving the contrarian view.

It doesn't matter what any of us think though... it is warming.

Earth’s Energy Out of Balance: The Smoking Gun for Global Warming
http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/imbalance_release.pdf

"Scientists at Columbia University, NASA, and the Department of Energy have found that the Earth is out of energy balance: the Earth is absorbing more energy from sunlight than it is emitting back to space in the form of heat radiation. This imbalance provides confirmation of global warming theory and a measure of the net forcing that human’s are applying to the Earth by adding greenhouse gases and other pollutants to the Earth’s atmosphere."

Actually, there is no doubt that global warming is occurring -- even the naysayers admit that. The question should be, "Do you believe global warming is caused by human activities?" This is called anthropogenic global warming, or AGW. This is where the controversy is.

My position as a scientist and former professor of earth sciences is an unqualified YES -- the connection between average temperature and the rise in CO2 in the atmosphere is not a coincidence. Some people will always deny it, of course. Ignorance is bliss, especially for the scientifically illiterate and SUV owners.

Yes the weather is warming up. Currently I never snows in the town that I grew up in. Back in the 1970s when I was a child it would snow almost every year and my uncle stated that when he was a child (late 60s to early 70s) there was 3 feet of snow. Only two generations the weather change has been noticeable.

But weather change is normal; learn about the Geological History of our world. The Earth warms up and the Earth cool down.

The problem with Sociology is that the one who doing the research often forgets to remove themselves from the equation. Try to study society without feeling like they are a part of society. Also, Sociologists often like to take the easy road out when it come to taking random samples. They tend to perform Convenience Sampling. For example they will only interview other college students instead of the general population. Remember this when reading sociology books that they do this. These books are not 100% accurate and sometimes put out wrong information.

Most people want others to practice sustainable living. While they continue living life like no tomorrow. Have a nice day.

No, I know it's real, and mostly caused by us.

This is science and what counts is the data. BOATMAN 1 is right about that.

"I wasn’t convinced by a person or any interest group—it was the data that got me. I was utterly convinced of this connection between the burning of fossil fuels and climate change. And I was convinced that if we didn’t do something about this, we would be in deep trouble.”

Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly, USN (Ret.)
Former NASA Administrator, Shuttle Astronaut and the first Commander of the Naval Space Command

Here are two summaries of the mountain of peer reviewed data that convinced Admiral Truly and the vast majority of the scientific community, short and long.

There's a lot less controversy about this is the real world than there is on Yahoo answers:

http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/articles/home_page/412.php?lb=hmpg1&pnt=412&nid=&id=

And vastly less controversy in the scientific community than you might guess from the few skeptics talked about here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/306/5702/1686

"There's a better scientific consensus on this [climate change] than on any issue I know... Global warming is almost a no-brainer at this point. You really can't find intelligent, quantitative arguments to make it go away."

Dr. Jerry Mahlman, NOAA

Global Warming IS real, but it is a part of nature. This has happened dozens of times in history. What is different this time is that we have the science available to learn more about it. There is no need to be freaking out, it will cool down on its own just like it has every time before.

Absolutely I believe in Global Warming!!! 110%!

Why?

If you look at the last 50 + plus years on past years Enviormental data & facts for Temperature, Weather Systems, Storm Frequency (such as hurricanes, rainfall, snowfall etc..) Ocean Temperature and of course the Ice Caps significant amount of melting and continued melting till now, yes our planet is getting warmer. I wont get into whether its Humans and Fossil Fuel Emissions that are to blame or be as ignorant to say its the planets natural cycle and humans and fossil fuel emissions have nothing to do with it, Humans, Fossil Fuels & the Energy we use (Coal, Nuclear Waste, Oil) definitely do not help the planet in anyway and if anything only compound the process of any natural Global Warming that may occur to that X 100 or more by the things we cosume and dispose of as waste.

We can also not forget that while we are putting fossil fuel emissions into the air polluting it, we are also cutting down trees in the Rainforest by large amounts of acres every year not to mention many other forests, amazon jungles. and wilderness that we have out there are being cut down and used for building our homes and the llike. When you cut down The rainforest, and any wilderness we have where theres thousands, millions of acres of trees your cutting down the very thing that gives us HUMANS Oxygen to breathe especially when the Amazon Rainforest is considered our planet's LUNGS

When you take away trees and the bare essentials of any wilderness or amazon your also killing off the species that thrive in that habitiat and make the ECO SYSTEM of our planet sustainable to live in. Every Animal in the wild has a purpose and serves a purpose to keep the Eco System in balance espcially predators like wolves, tigers, bears..Lions they are what keep any Eco System from deterierating and becoming unsustainable for any life. Same thing goes for the ECO SYSTEM in the Ocean, same scenario just in the Water. If you over fish the Oceans, Pollute the oceans, throw dynamite in the coral reefs to fish out fish who hide in there, thats starting a major catastrophe for us all if Coral Bleaching begins . Everything is interwoven with one another as far as the Enviorment goes and when you see lakes that once held there place which are now dried up and no more, rivers that are no more, stronger hurricanes, more rainfall in places where it is unlikely and less rainfall where it is, Fires in California (where I live) Ice storms..... that has to tell you something. We all need to pay attention to the signs that are right in front of our face telling us whats to come if we dont do something.

The Ice caps - they are melting - and if anyone would like to dispute that, they can look at google earth and take a look at the size of our ice caps today, its very scary
