Extended warranties are a cash cow for electronics retailers. They add a couple-few hundred dollars to the purchase price and they rarely have to follow through with any repairs. Also, some of those warranties have various restrictions in them about what's covered and why.

I never buy extended warranties. If something is going to break because of a manufacturing defect, it's most likely going to happen early, during the manufacturer's warranty period (usually 1 year from purchase). Just make sure you register your product with the manufacturer after you purchase it. Not doing so can possibly void a warranty.

Those other two answers are somewhat - out there. If you are spending more than 1,000 dollars on anything , buy y= the extended warranty. Because sometimes things go bad after the warranty is up (usually a year), and if you need to get it fixed, then you are covered. With new tv's they can't be guaged by the likes of tube tv's, they will cost much more to fix. Usually an extended warranty helps take the lemon factor out of the equation. If your tv devolps a problem, if it has to be fixed more than 3 times you will get a replacemnt tv, check out the warranty.

My brother got a brand new plasma after his developed problems in year 2-3, at the end of year 3 of his 4 year warranty (cost 125$), his set was replaced. And they even let him buy a limited warranty with the new set.

Protect your self, equipment is not made to last any longer.

TVs are very dependable and if it's defective you'll find out while it's under the factory warranty. Extended warranties are pushed so hard by th retailer because the are almost all profit, So I never recommend extended warranties, and even if it breaks out of warranty you can usually fix it cheaper than what you spend on the over priced extended warranty.
