There are lots of good examples. Other things to examine
1) Prejudice against Catholics by other denominations of CHristians. Some even claim that Catholics are NOT christians and that the Pope is the anti-christ. This despite the continual calls for peace and holding fast to anti-abortion, etc...
2) Look at Giovanni Geezus's response. This shows a tendancy many have - to blame Catholics for things with very little research. Was the Catholic church involved in these areas.. some. In Salem, it was Puritans. Heck, the Catholic church banned the Malleus Maleficarum due to it's misuse in hunting 'witches'. Yes, the witch trials were crazy, but it was less of a Church activity then people going crazy and the local judge having too much power. (This is why England had less of a problem, because they had a strong legal system, requiring more evidence... the continental European judges tended to have a lot more power.) The inquisition was actually not nearly as bad as many claim it was. In fact, many legal defendants would claim to be non-believers so they could be transfered to the inquisitional court. Why? Because it was a better court, safter and healtier. It was also the STATE that killed, not the church. One of those situations where the church is put in a difficult situation. If it would rightly declare someone a non-believer (I forget the correct term), then the state would step in and often take over with the sentencing. Heck, one anti-Catholic source claimed so many were killed by the Inquisition that it would have been greater then the population of Europe at the time.. an obvious mistake in numbers or else a blatent attempt to make it look much worse.

The saxxons - Wiki may not be the best source, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Verdict_of_Verden
Today, the veracity of this event is questioned in some quarters: there may have been a misspelling in the original source by which the Latin delocabat (meaning exiled or displaced) erroneously became decollabat (meaning beheaded). Archaeological evidence for the massacre has not been found, although the bodies of the slain could have been buried elsewhere by their next-of-kin.

So that is under dispute.
I am in no way claiming the Catholic church has not made mistakes or commited bad acts. But we are blamed for everything with little effort into research or defense. The Catholic church often owns up to its errors in the past. John Paul II stating the church should have done more for the Jews. (even though the Pope at the time did a lot at great risk to himself and Catholics in general).

I think this could be a good paper. I would recommend that you examine some of the things the Church has done wrong as well, to show that there is some support for negative views of the church. But there are many cases available.

Good luck and God bless!

Look up JFK. The invasion of Ireland by the British where they prohibited any Catholic from teaching or holding public office. The KKK is anti-Catholic so were the communists in Spain during the Civil war in the 1930s. Even know is okay to make fun of Catholics but not of any other group.

Research the history of Ireland. I believe it was around the 1500s when Protestant England invaded and made a law saying that it was illegal to be Catholic. This is why there is a current division in Ireland between Irish Catholics and Protestant Catholics.

There are quite a few times in history where Catholics have been discriminated against.

Few worth noting:

1. Research the birth of the Church of England
2. Research J.F.Kennedy's run for president
3. Research the crusades

Catholics were not allowed to hold public office when the United States was founded. In fact, Lord Baltimore founded "Maryland" as a colony where Catholics could have equal rights.

It happens a lot on TV talk shows, Catholic bashing from mostly people who have no true understanding of the religion speak as if they do. And then others take their word, as if it's fact.

You would have a lot more information to go on if you were writing a paper about persecution by Catholics. The Inquisition, the Crusades, the Witch Hunts, etc. Did you know that Charlemagne once cut the heads off of nearly 5,000 Saxons because they refused to worship Jesus?

Henry VIII murdered many Catholics and destroyed monestries and Catholic places of worship partly because he wanted to divorce and it was against the Catholic religion.

Catholics have actually been discriminated in America, especially during America's national infancy.
