I was diagnosed about 2 months ago with an underactive thyroid "hypothyroidism". I've been on Synthroid 0.05mg since then. Just 3 days ago, I started having problems catching my breath, taking deep breaths and just feeling out of breath even when sitting still and it gets quite scary. I've read that, that could be because the dosage is too high?. I can't make an appointment with my doctor until tomorrow and not sure when he can get me in. So would it be safe to stop my medication until I get in to see my doctor? Has anyone else expericenced this?

If you are going to stop taking it , I would taper off slowly.

Hi there...so when I was 17 I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I actually have graves disease...another dangerous type of tyrhoid diseases.

My suggestion is that you DO NOT stop taking your medicine. I am going to say that your dose is not too high. Usually with hypo it's hard to get that reaction from a higher dose. Because technically your levels are always lower than normal so to become hyper like that is tough.

A few reasons of why your levels may be off are if you recently had a loss or increase of your weight, if your cholesteral is too high, or if your blood sugar is low.

I think that you should call your doctor. Speak to him or her on the phone, have him or her write up some lab work so you can get your blood drawn ahead of time so you won't have to wait for your results. Make an appointment to see your doc and then discuss it.

Don't panic your not going to die. Just don't stop taking your meds. If you do, you're at risk for unbalancing everything in your system.

Take care.

i have been on thyroid medicine for over 20 years. i am a 36 yo male and i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when i was about 15. i lost a few inches of growth because i was diagnosed very late. if you miss your medication for a few days you will feel kinda lousy and be tired and be low on energy. i am taking .200 mcg everyday. this is the largest pill that they make. if you do not take your pill it will throw off your t4 levels. it sound like your dosage is to high and you should ask the doctor to take more blood tests. you should have a blood test done once a year anyways.

I have hypothyroidism also. Check your resting pulse rate. If you are short of breath because your dosage is too high, your heart rate will also be fast. If your pulse is below 100, the shortness of breath is probably something else. If your resting pulse is 110 or so, then cut your pill in half and take half a pill.
When I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism, my doctor put me on 0.05 mg. synthyoid and it was too strong for me. I was short of breath, had a rapid pulse, very hungry, and had chest pains. I also felt very weak.
Do you wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air?
