Back than they didn't have: DNA test, Fingerprinting, ballistics, Forensics, surveillance cameras, and wire tapping. Is it possible that religion was created as an incentive for people to do the right thing, and instill fear in those who don't have a conscience. I believe so. Back than it was easy to get away with murder, rape, theft. And there is not much reward in going out of your way to help a stranger. What do you think.

Absolutely it was a means of control. Religion is totally political and man made.

Depends on the religion. Buddhism / Taoism, no. Christians and Muslims, yes. They've always been a way to control the minds and body of the uneducated masses.

That's reasonable. I believe most strongly in the evidence that points to our fear of death as being the major genesis of religions, myths, etc.

I think it primarily develops as an attempt to answer various questions, and develops into a set of rules for social living as groups increase.

No, I really don't think so. Back in those days people who murdered were killed. People who stole lost their hand etc. They didn't need religion as a deterrent...they had capital punishment.

I think religion is exactly what it should be...the structure we need to grow towards God.
