Normally you sign a consent form at the back part of the job application form that you completed when you went in for an interview.

Did the interviewer tell you that they would be conducting a background check on you now or did they say they would get back to you? Just because you went to the interview does not automatically mean they will run a check on you.

Actually the answer is yes and no. If they hire an outside firm to do the background check, then YES! But-only if you signed a consent form. So applications have a small box at the end of it that has small print about obtaining a "consumer report" If you sign it they will be able to to a basic check. They cant pull friving records off that. If they do driving record checks then you would have signed a seperate consent form asking Name DOB and DL#

If the company is going to do a check on their own then...No. Let me explain. They can do a civil and criminal check on you w/o consent. Industry secret-Anyone can do those checks on you at anytime for any reason. Why? They are public record.

Now, the company cannot pull credit reports or driving information without consent.

BTW, A civil search would consist of checking for divorces or judgments and lawsuits-that kind of thing/

Yes. Before any background check is submitted, you would need to sign and fill out a "Disclosure and Authorization to Obtain Information" In short, you are saying that you 'voluntarily and knowingly authorize people to release information about you'. If in fact you are turned down for employment, you will also receive an 'adverse action form', telling you where the information was retrieved, and to contact them for additional information.

But different states have different guidelines regarding what can and cannot be verified.

Background checks vary. They don't always necessarily deal with credit and personal relationship history. It generally depends on the position. For the most part, what is verified is your social security number (whether or not it's valid - CA and IL have additional guidelines as to verifying this), as well as your employment, education and criminal background history. They go as far back as applicable by law (generally seven years, but it depends on the criteria and guidelines set up by each employer and/or state)

When dealing with accounting and finance positions, (and sometimes positions in Senior Management) companies do run a credit check. They don't necessarily look for onesie and twosie things to be wrong on your credit, they are looking for patterns of behavior over at least the past few years.

Again, no one is perfect, and that's not what employers are looking for. They also understand that often times there are mitigating circumstances (divorce, health crisis) when it comes to credit. However, generally it's just employment, education, and criminal.

No if it is part of the job requirement for you to get hired.
Grumman ran a back round check on me and it took them ten months to finish. When you filled out the application that was giving them permission. Just like when you go for a loan they tell you that they are going to run a credit report, if you want the loan whether you like it or not.

when you went on the interview they should have told you that they will be doing a background check, gave you the paperwork and ask you to review and sign if you agree. most companies tell you if they are doing or plan to do a background check

No anyone anywhere can run a background check on any person. The only thing they would need your signed consent to run a credit report.

You do have to give permission but they have the right not to hire you if you refuse to submit to the background check.

Yes, they should have either had you sign a consent form or if you filled out an application it may have been on there and by signing the application you already gave permission.

yes, they need your consent before running any background. usually if you filled out an application, there is a box that you check yes or no for them; they will usually only run a background if you are one of the top candidates - background cost $$$ to run so companies aren't going to run backgrounds on candidates that they are outright rejecting or don't meet their minimum qualifications. good luck, i hope they run it!

No, they do not need permission to do a bg check. You probably gave them permission to do so in some of the pre-hire paperwork you signed.
