Virtually all fruits and vegetables have some sugar in them, or they wouldn't exist (the sugar is created as a by-product of photosynthesis).

Onions (a vegetable) have about 1/3 the sugar content of apples, which is why we don't eat onions like apples, which is the reason we don't say, "An onion a day keeps the doctor away," barring bad breath, of course! ;)

So, as with any other fruit or vegetable, yes, a diabetic should be concerned, but, it's nothing to worry about, unless you're planning to eat them whole in the course of a single day (but, if you do, please stay at least 10 feet away from me, okay?). ;)

RE:
do onions turn into sugar, after they are eaten? should a diabetic be concerned about onions?

I think onions have around 16 grams of carbs. for a medium onion and carbs have to be watched on a diabetic diet, but they are sodium free, fat free and low calorie. If a diabetic ate them like apples, you would need to be concerned, but just a slice or chopped in with other foods you shouldn't have to be.

There is a lot of stuff on the internet that is basically fat-shaming diabetics for causing their own diabetes with their bad diet and lack of exercise and general lack of moral fibre. A lot of this stuff is written by non-doctors, often with a supplement or diet or training plan to sell that they claim will completely cure diabetes if only people stick to it.

I read this interesting book https://tr.im/SzOb9 that gave me a lot of useful tips about my disease and also a different perspective on the best therapeutical approach. I think you should read it too.

I hope it helps

Yes but it's minimal. It doesn't contain as much carbs as say, apples, but onions do contain sugar.

It is so minimal that it does not affect diabetics.
