Is it considered offensive?
I usually see a latino or filipino person get them once in a while and doesn't seem to have (too much) of a problem, but I remember getting them done two years back & a lot of people, mostly black, gave me dirty looks, namely a lot in my generation (18-25) who felt they had to give me "that look". I even had one lady who was walking in front of me as I was walking into the mall just open the door for herself just to show disrespect.
At my job, most of the older (30+) didn't have a problem with it, but I had a lot of black kids who felt they had to give me "that look" (and some wannabe-black white girls who had the same issue). Is it considered offensive for a white person, or should I say non-black person (I'm latin/white) to get braids in their hair?
I wasn't trying to be black when I got it done by the way, it actually looked nice on me, especially after a few days of initially getting it done (when it dries and settles in).

It's a shame that people think you are stealing their race's culture (not just culture, because when you think about it, three is more to culture than just race) when in fact you are moving beyond boundries of race and being yourself.
I would say the lookers and door slammers maybe are not confident enough to move beyond some hairstyle being offensive that they themselves are racist. There are much bigger issues at hand than hair. Having a particular hairstyle should not be what defines your race and certain styles should not be restricted from certain races.
Someone who was rude to you because of your hair had to be a racist themselves, just be glad you are not one.

well...my friend seth has really long hair and he's in track so he had to put it in cornrows (now i call him cornpop) or else he had to get it cut.. but..you don't really have that excuse. so idk..do what you want. be yourself. i wouldn't see it as offensive..maybe others do. sorry i'm not much help, but whatever you choose to do with your hair is your problem. cheers and best of luck.

It isn't offencive for a non black person to have braids - if people are offended by it then they are ignorant. Its stupid that people were giving you dirty looks - its your hair and you can do what ever you want with it! I find it odd as a black person that its ok for black people to embrace like white culture, but its not ok the other way round.

lol. its dumb. its like no one has a problem with a black girl with straight hair, when we all well and good know black people have afro hair. but when you rock an afro as a woman your looked down on. same goes with whites with cornrows, its so abnormal to people. its not a big deal to me. everytime you see some black chick or dude looking at you odd, think about the billions black girls waste trying to look like white girls, wearing someone's hair weave and calling it their own. lol. its bananas.

Just smirk at em and act like you know something they don't then they will fell insecure and back off, since when does any culture "own" a culture, stupid that is what they are(and not because they are black or young or anything it is because they are ignorant and they will be the death of us all)

If black guys were hatin on you it's because they think you're gonna get loads of attention from girls, thats a threat. ( yes, I'm a black woman who hangs around other women and yes we talk).
If me and my homegirls were to see you, we would stare in Awe because it's so rare for us to see a white dude with dreads and braids.
If a blackwoman was to put you down for having braids, (most of the time) it's only because they want to know what other blackwomen think.

Some black people don't want white people to be like them and some white people think all black people should be like them. It's your life and your hair and if you can be comfortable with the attention, go for it. Be what you want to be. It's nobody elses business.
