It is best to start inside, possibly with your dog on a long leash.

Hide in an almost obvious spot and call your dog to you. ONLY USE THE DOG'S NAME ONCE. Reward the dog for coming to you (treats, praise, petting, playing with toys, etc.). If the dog is not coming, make yourself very exciting: "Come here Fluffy! YAY!!! Yeah girl! WOOHOO!!!!".

Once your dog has got this down, try having someone else hold the dog while you go and hide (still in the house). Have the person holding your dog when you give the command (or enough time for you to hide has passed). Have the person holding the dog give the dog a command ("Find" or "Search" or whatever word you want). Begin calling the dog again. Treat and reward heavily when the dog finds you.

After weeks of doing it like this, move to the outdoors. By now, the dog should understand the command you are using, but it is possible that you will need to call him/her anyway since there are more distractions outside. It might even be a good idea to start the entire process over (leash first, etc. etc.).

Good luck! This is a VERY fun game to play with your dog and is an excellent recall exercise!

This is funny - I play hide and seek inside the house with my dogs. My Siberian Husky especially loves to play. I make him sit in the living room and tell him to stay. Then I go towards the bedrooms and find a place to hide (usually behind a door, in a closet (door open), or behind the other side of the bed. When I am ready I just yell his name once Attila! and he will come find me.

When he knows the general area that I am in - I will jump out and say rawr or something similar. He gets so excited and barks and runs the other way. Then he runs right back to me and wants to play again. He loves it!

When he knows where I am he will stop and wait for me to jump out to scare him. While he is waiting he will sometimes jump down on his 2 front paws anticipating my "scare" lol. Its just too funny!

Get someone to help you. Hold the dog and you go hide but let the dog see you hide. Then send her to find you. Each time you play hide better and eventually don't let her see where you went. She'll get the picture eventually.

You can do this alone if you use a toy. Let her see you hide it and use a word (find or fetch) to send her for it. You may even have to use treats at first. They are very smart and it doesn't take them long to learn and they are very excited about learning. My dog jumps with joy when she learns a new word. You can see her go YEA i know that one.

I wait for the dog's attention to be elsewhere (like getting a drink in the kitchen) then I go hide in another part of the house. I usually call him and he comes looking but can't find me. He'll usually run from room to room looking for me. Once he finds me I make a big to-do about it. "Yay! You found me! Good boy!" and give him a treat.

I throw a ball (inside or outside) and while they're going after the ball I hide. When they want to bring the ball back to me they have to find me. They get so excited when they find me. The first couple times I did it, I had to call their name until they got the idea of the game.
