anyone knows what kind of training i need to undergo so i can be good in kata? now im doing my side block (yoko uke if im right) by using a dumbell. but there are alot of other aspects as well. when i move (whether long, half or short stance) and do my punch or blocks, my body wavered as if being blow by wind. speed is another thing. im really slow.
how can i improve all this aspect for good kata? any other aspect for good kata that i miss?

Do you know the way to Carnagie Hall?
Practice, Practice, practice....

I love kata. If you are always perfecting kata, you will always continue learning and growing as a martial artist.

Practice kata different ways. Very slow, deep and low. Fast as you can. Very hard or very soft. With focus on breath. With focus on form, with focus on ma-ai. Focus on the flow.

Then, practice some more.

Video tape your kata and watch it. Ask your sensei for feedback and watch him/her do the kata. Learn the bunkai.

I sometimes do kata in a weight vest or with ankle or wrist weights. Keep weights light and practice slow, this can cause some joint damage if you are not careful.

I set aside some time every day for kata.

Keep up the good work!

Wonderful!!! A young man endeavoring to become good at kata! This is a great thing.

Kata is your whole martial art.

Remember that your kata has to become part of you. All of your techniques are in your kata. Your strikes, joint-locks, grappling, takedowns and throws, your pressure point techniques... all these things are there.

Do your kata. Do it again. Repeat until you drop. I hope your teacher is giving you the right corrections, proper posture, correct rhythm, breath, intention, alignment. All these things are important for developing your skill.
