This is something that is vital to a Christian if they are to maintain a healty relationship with God.A Doctor needs the right information to heal those who are sick, without it many of their patients would die.In order for them to get the right information they need to know where to find it.It is much the same for a Christian. If they lack the ability to get the right information they will find themselves sick, and many will die.

Jerry M: There is truth to what you say.But if I am struggling with pride reading "O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer".Psalms 31:23 won't help me very much.I hope this explains my question a little better.

Well, I think it would be a little different answer depending whether you are a baby Christian or an adult Christian. When I was a baby Christian I would look everything up in the concordance by word or category to help me find all those scriptures. But now that I am older, I know most of them and where they are. And I have learned not to just read the scripture but the whole chapter or even the whole book to get it's full meaning. And no matter whether we are young or old Christians, we always need to pray to the Lord that His Holy Spirit guide us to the right scriptures that will help us to find the answers to what we are seeking.

All the glory be His.

Don, hun, the ENTIRE Bible is good to begin with!

If you want to start building Spiritually, I have been advised by many devout Christians to begin with the Gospels - specifically starting with John. Read the rest of the Gospels.

Then continue with Acts, Romans and the other New Testament books. Revelations is a bit subjective, so that book I leave to classes to learn about.

The Old Testament also has great value since it speaks of Christ and the coming of the final days. Both the New and Old Testaments compliment and back up/verify each other. You can do no wrong. If you get a little "lost" then speak with your pastor. You can get one of the specialty Bibles that have great reference passages, maps, documentaries included which help you understand some history behind the books or passages that you read. My choice is the Life Application Bible, but any good one will do. It's always good to have many versions to help clarify verses, as well.

I've attached a link below of a Bible verse lookup site that will allow you to read the same verses from different versions of the Bible out there.

You seem to be going thru a transition in your life, as your recent questions are of a hungry-for-the-Truth nature. I will pray for you that you will be able to find that intimacy with God, and walk the rest of your life with Him guiding you along lifes ups and downs.

Peace, Brother!

I have read the entire Bible from front to back several times, but now I usually follow a lectionary, which lists an Old Testament reading (other than Psalms) or occasionally a reading from Acts in the NT, one or more Psalms, a New Testament reading (Acts-Revelation) , and a reading from one of the 4 canonical Gospels (Matt., Mark, Luke, or John) for each day. The one I follow is from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. I usually read at least the Sunday readings and try to read the other days as I have time.

Reading an old text written by means of guys is not going to tell me anything about whether or not there's a god. The only thing the Bible can do is provide me perception into the minds of persons who lived on the time it was once written. Furthermore, my disbelief in any kind of god comes from an understanding of science and the natural world; it has nothing to do with any distinct religion.

In general, as Jesus reiterated, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD" (Deuteronomy 8:3, Matthew 4:4, Luke 4:4).

But if you need to know about a specific subject, a topical concordance can help. Some bibles even come with mini topical concordances. And you can most probably find a few on-line.

It really should be read in its entirety but if you are just going to read a portion of it. Then it depends on what your need is.

If you are needing salvation then the Gospel of John is excellent. You will find the word believe over 90 times in just this book of the Bible.

If you are needing instruction for daily living then of course the book of proverbs is the answer.I also recommend the book of James.

If you are being pulled away from your faith by cults and false religion the the Book of Galatians is the answer for you.

Once again let me say that it all depends on what your need is. If I can help please feel free to write me and tell me more about what you are looking for.

Such an important part of our day as believers eh brother Don. Often very neglected in our daily diet. As christians, you are right.. we need to maintain a healthy relationship with God by feeding and drinking day by day of the Word. This is our spirit's provision by the Lord Jesus. He has given us His word which is Spirit and Life to us. We need to take the time, to give ourselves for this nourishing each day. Asking the Lord to increase our appetite for the word so that we can maintain a healthy well fed, well exercised, vital spirit.
What has helped me over the years brother is to read the word in a systematic way. Starting from Genesis and moving forward. As I read and when there is a verse or phrase in the word, I ponder and pray-read over it. This really makes the word real and causes me to exerise not just my mind to understand the word but moreso my spirit to lay hold of the depth of the word. We have a learning spirit and this spirit is indwelt by the Holy Spirit Himself, Who leads and guides us into all truth.

If we read the word in an orderly way then the Lord has a way to discipline us. If we leave it to just how we feel then we may never finish reading the bible.
I have a timetable that i downloaded that is a real help to me. You can finish reading the bible in 1 year or 2 years or more based on your desire. Here is a link for anyone who is interested:)

One more thing brother..and this I believe I treasure the most. Where I meet we all go through the bible together. Based on the leading of the Holy Spirit we target different books at a time. We just finished the 3 epistles of John over the last few weeks. We have a portion that we go over each week and when we meet together each Sunday, after enjoying the Lord's table and the fellowship in Psalms, hymns and Spiritual songs.. we each function to feed one another of what we enjoyed all through the week. One or two brothers will give an overview but each one has a portion. So for a few mins each we give to this feast and all function in the Body and grow up into the Head together. Its very healthy and no one is left out.
I just praise the Lord for this positive way to go on day by day.
He has afforded us EVERYTHING by His grace and mercy.

May we continue feeding, growing, and build up the Body as the Bride FOR Christ!

Ty for posting brother Don
Your sister and fellow enjoyer of the rich word

Sandy

We read the Bible as God leads us to do. Sometimes it is whole chapters of something, at other times its just passages of scripture. We also like to read a psalm and a proberb every day, gaining new insight and wisdom daily, love it. It works too. And, we like to get the Bible , along with some hebrew and greek translation. We will take an area lets say God either has directly led us to study, or if nothing is revealed that moment, we will take something we are wanting to know more about, or something we are wanting to know more and take that word, say LOVE , or ANGELS, whatever the word, and find everything out about that one word that we can, and boy it all just begins to fit togehter like a giant puzzle, putting together one at a time, till the full piciture is formed. wowow. Do this with any topic you choose or that God chooses for you and watch. Doors and windows of Heaven open to more clear understanding and into deepness, so it doesnt just touch you and make some sense, you see how it applies to you in your own life, as the Holy Spirit reveals how to do it. God is so good, and you find the more you study, and the more you pray, the more you want even more, so you have such a hunger for God and His word, that you cant get enough. This is the Spirit of God working in us and its so awesome. I agree with you, if I am struggling on issues of trust and I just read about the garden of Eden, I may miss it. ITs still there, if you look deeply, its there in every verse really. But, if I want to trust, I must be someone others can trust, so I dig in and see all I can find about all of this. Works every time, and we learn more and more and are taken deeper and deeper every day. And then we see, the more we know, the more we need to learn> God is good to provide all that we need right when we need it, if we will just go to Him and do it His way.
God bles syou for another great thinking question. I pray all will study more becuse of your question. To God be the glory, and may He bless you to overflow.
AND yes, we are to know and ready and study and pray upon the whole Bible, absolutely as it all fits together for the truth. But, at the same time, for specific study, its ok to just take parts for the day to study and know. And sure of course, after you do that, then just go ahead and read a whole chapter of something, read thru it all. We need it all. we cant get too much of the word, can we??? But its also ok to study for specific purpose. The main thing is to read it, study it, pray about it and then do as God says....

I think everyone should read the whole Bible at least once in their lives. But if you want to know what the Bible says about a specific thing, a lot of Bibles have indexes in the back where you can look up certain subjects. You probably already knew this, I just wanted to offer my opinion.

Well, I have a daily devotional Bible that I read. At other times I skip around to different books.

When I am having an issue that I need God to speak to me on, I just let the Holy Spirit lead me to where it is I need to go to get my answer.

It is absolutely amazing how you can be reading along and then, bam, you get goose bumps, get that revelation, and get the answer you needed.

The Lord is amazing!
