If you are thinking of College at all, you should factor ROTC into the picture. WHy don't you choose a couple of schools that have ROTC Programs, then schedule a campus visit. While their make a visit to the Department of Military Science (Army) and the Department of Aerospace Studies. Talk to both the Faculty and some of the cadets. This is a big decision, so do a little leg work. The caderts in the programs will be a great source of information.

btw, I am not sure about the AirForce programs but I know Army ROTC offers a Nursing program, complete with scholarships. Contact them!!

Ok let me break it down for you.

If you enlist in the military before college you can elect to recieve the Montgomery GI Bill. It does not pay for all of college but will give you 1100 a month if you decide to attend school after your enlistment is up.

If you enlist after 2 years, there is a program for student loan repayment, however, to get it you would have to choose between that and the GI bill. You can't have both, so if you chose that you would still have 2 years left to pay out of pocket.

If you enlist with your 4 year degree you would be kinda stupid, as you can be an officer with a bachelors degree. However, part of being selected as an officer is you do not get any of your former schooling paid for. If you want to go for 4 yars you should look into AFROTC or one of the Academies. That way your school would be paid for while you go to it and you would still be an officer when you go in.

Now if you do enlist before college there is other programs to take classes while still in the USAF. Once you enlist you are automatically enrolled in the Community College of the Air Force. Most of the training you recieve will give you college credits towards your CCAF associates degree. Also while active duty you will be eligible for Tuition Assistance which pays 100% of tuition fees while Active. The drawback to this is if you get less than a C average in a class, you are required to pay back what they spent on you. Also you can get free CLEP and DANTES tests which give you credit without having to take the classes.

Now you mentioned wanting great drive and focus, unfortunately the USAF may not give you that. It is the least military of the branches and is the one that feels more like a 9-5 job. You may want to look into a tougher branch if discipline is what you are looking for.

On occaision the Air Force has reimbursed people for student loans. This normally happens when the Air Force is trying to attract people. There is no guarantee that this will happen when you want/need it to. Currently, the AF is offering 100% tuition assistance (but no books) up to $4500 a fiscal year (Oct thru Sep) The AF has paid 100% before and then lowered it to 75%, which is still better than a stick in the eye. Depending on the career field you go into, you may have more or less opportunity to go to school. A friend of mine was security forces (cop) and she actually got to go to school more than I did as a personnelist (HR). Of course, she didn't sleep for two years but she did it and now she has a BSN.
I disagree with your friend who says that you would be more focused. You get used to a certain lifestyle and its hard to give that up. Its also harder to be around 18-20 year olds whose parents still do their laundry when you can clean an M-16 blindfolded.
Have you considered AFROTC? It is not the same as high school ROTC. It is not the same as high school rotc. I typed it twice because it is that different. There are several scholarship opportunities including full tuition for high school seniors. If you are serious about becoming a doctor, you should look at USUHS. They will put you through medical school and, in return you will owe so many years of service.

The air force will not pay for schooling you already took. You will earn money for school based on how many years you enlist for. Whether you will party or not isn't the point. Military guys party more than anyone! If you go to school and graduate before you enlist you will automatically have a higher rank, which is good if you want to make the Air Force your career. If you just want to serve for 4-6 years and then go on with your life, do it first so they will pay for part of your schooling.

Some contracts come with student loan repayment. It is about 1200 a year for the amount they give you. It hardly ever covers the whole amount.
