I have actually done that at Target before, with a 24 pack of bottled water that I put under the cart. I realized that i didn't pay for it when i was loading my Jeep up. I went back into the store, to the customer service desk, with the water and the receipt and explained to them what happened. The lady called her manager over and not only did they give me the water, they gave me a $25 gift card. The manager said that she respected my honesty and that I was a real value to Target.
Just another example of "Honesty being the best Policy."

Look at your receipt carefully, and see if it didn't come as an accessory with something else. I would go back the next day early in the morning or late in the evening, bring your receipt, and tell the manager what happened. This is a lot of money. $10 somehow, but $216 with tax--that's a bit too much and way out of line, and just looking at that item will make you feel a bit funny. I say return it, and if you can't afford to buy it's ok. God bless your heart.

If I was still in the store when I realized, I'd go back through the line and pay for the items. If I was long gone before I realized, I'd forget about it.
I recently had a checker take a $2 coupon off my total twice, but I was long gone from the store before I looked at my receipt, so I just shrugged it off.

I'd say just chalk it up to luck. I can't tell you how many times I've been overcharged at a store. I'm one of those people who keeps receipts and check them over when I get home. Almost weekly I'm charged more for something than the price said it was. A lot of times I don't go back, because I factor in gas, convenience, etc.
So I say, the store can stand to lose something from time to time.

I would just keep them and make sure I do a good deed to keep my karma in check. There have been times where something costs a lot and it rings up wrong, and I've never said anything. I guess I figure it's just my good luck. I'm sure with the ridiculous mark up in stores that it's not hurting the company.

The cashier made the mistake, not you, so really you dont have to go back and pay for it.
However, this deals more with the kind of person you are.If you truly feel bad, then go back to the store. But if you are ok with it and maybe look at this as a blessing, then dont.
Also, if you do go back, the store may accuse you of stealing and now you feel guilty so you are returning it. . it sounds crazy but its happend!
Do what you feel like. There really is no rule.

You should go back and pay for them, especially since they were expensive. What if one of the items is broken or defective? The gift recipient will not be able to exchange them without a receipt or proof of purchase.

If the cashier's till drawer will be short, definitely take it back right away, it's not worth causing someones job.
If you don't have a good feeling about it, return to the store, but try to talk to the same cashier... talking to the manager, about an honest mistake, could also cost the cashier their job... unfortunately :(

The honest thing would be to take it back either right away or when you go back again with the receipt. It only takes a few minutes. And it will come back to you. Suppose your wallet got stolen. Wouldn't you want someone to return it?
