*shrug*

They are praying for help getting the things that they need. They aren't just praying that God will hand something to them without any effort on their part. They're going to do what they can to make it happen and are asking God to help with the things that are out of their control. It's not about handing their responsibility over to God; it's about receiving help from God.

We live in a society that thrives on passing the buck. Instead of taking responsibility for their own lives it is easier to "pray on it" and sit on their duff. Truly religious people should know that the bible says "faith without works is dead". Pray all you want, just be proactive as well.

People rely on prayer because they feel that is the only thing they have left. For example: a murderer who has been assigned capital punishment, and as he/she is about to face their death sentence might bless themselves right before they are killed, because they have fear of the unknown.
Technically we're not supposed to pray for things we want, because we wont get them, but rather the strength to get through the obstacle we're about to face.
No one really knows, but most people pray out of fear, because they want to be saved.
Its wrong to do that, its actually out of selfishness when one says "God please may i pass this test" ultimately God can't make you pass a test, only you can. God can't grant you a job, its up to the employer. So why do we do it? maybe because we feel its the only thing we have left when we go through a tough time.
Hope it helps ! :)

We are responsible. We are responsible to pray about everything. That is God's command.
But that does not mean we don't work. That doesn't mean we don't take steps to accomplish what we have been praying about.
God calls us to prayer. God calls us to labor. They go hand in hand.
god bless

if i were to pray that i get a good job. i would actually mean that, "god be with me in my interview (or w/e), take away my nervousness, so i can do well." you can do well but you can also screw up just as easily so i pray that he is with me and will help me. and gives me the power that i need to succeed.
god isnt some magic thing that grants wishes. he helps you accomplish what you need to do.

I pray for my grandson and granddaughter constantly because they are teenagers and I can't control them. They need to make mistakes because we learn by our mistakes, but I trust God in my prayers to take care of them. I realize God can protect them where I cannot. It is always best to pray first and act later. When God is involved in the actions it turns out better.

I don't see the contradiction between praying and taking responsibility for your life.
Doesn't taking responsibility for your own life, include using all the tools at your disposal? If it's possible that prayer will help you accomplish something, why not take advantage of it?

They don't just rely on prayer. They pray and then go out and help make it happen. God helps those who help themselves.

Don't mock me! I pray to the golfing gods and their will is my way, as evidenced by my years of continual growth and improvement( It had nothing to do with the 20 years worth of hard work I did.)

prayer does not mean we are to do nothing- prayer means that we are relying on God to help us do what we are supposed to do. Just a suggestion- read the book of Nehemiah- He was man of prayer who rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem- He did not expect God to rebuild it - however he never once did anything before praying. The whole idea of prayer is not getting God ready to do our will, but getting us ready to do His.
