Your consciousness probably ceases to exist. We have nothing that points to anything else. This is scary to alot of people because it is so final. But most people have never really considered what Eternal life would really be like, even if it was in paradise. Eternity would mean that at some point, we would tire of all things, and then be locked in a prison of despair and meaninglessness.
It is interesting that so many people spend their short life on earth, finding meaning in attempting to attain an everlasting life that will lead to meaninglessness.
The good new is that matter is infinite. So the cells that once made up your body will change into gases and carbon, but the matter will continue to be used in the earth for other life to exist. One day the sun will implode and the resulting burst of energy will blast the earth into dust. The matter that once made up you and I will be thrown into space, where it will be used to create new stars or new planets, and maybe be used to enable new alien life forms.
We are all made of stardust.

Looking at some of the other responses here, you might think that Atheism means hardened cynicism and rudeness. Though I do not believe in anything religious, I would never rule out possibilities for afterlife, before life, etc.
Perhaps we are just not meant to know the true answer in this lifetime, and it would be presumptuous to assume that one does know - for certain. To base ones' beliefs on what one can surmise from current scientific findings - which are a human creation - is as false as basing one's beliefs on something written in an old book.

Most atheists believe there is nothing after death -- when your brain stops functioning, you stop experiencing anything and your consciousness ceases to exist.
The closest thing to an afterlife is the impact you had on the world -- your accomplishments and actions and the way people remember you.
Some people find this depressing, but I think it's liberating. It means that it's really important to make the most of this life, because it's the only one you'll get!

If it's possible that your personality might continue to exist after death in some form or fashion, that consciousness may perhaps live in whatever dream it chooses, if that dream be a Christian heaven, or canoeing an endless river, or having one endless orgasm with a gorgeous woman. :)
But eventually, no matter what it might be, it will come to an end, if for no other reason than you would want it to.
You can get bored with anything (and everything) eventually. After boredom, would come desperation, and praying for your existence to end.

some Atheists think that when you die you die and that you should make the most of your life because when its over its over, but if you truly believe this then what would be the point of living and why would you waste your life doing what others tell you to do.

After you die, people dress up your body and put it in a box. Or they sometimes burn it up and put it in a vase or dump it out somewhere. There is not afterlife, since you are dead. Remember what it was like before you were born? That is what death is like.

Some atheists believe in reincarnation, that your "energy" or "life force" is transferred rather than dissipates. Others believe one travels to an afterlife.
Personally, I believe I'll find out when I die.

if you believe in something enough to will it to happen, then that's what will happen...
if you think you'll go to heaven, that's what you'll do
if you think your soul will be reincarnated, it shall
if you don't feel passionately about anything, then you'll just kind of snuff out....
just a theory (obviously), and not very well-written at that. sorry! good luck on your journey:-)

Nothing happens (for you at least) after death. Death, by definition, is the end of you.
