You will see lots of Israeli soldiers on the streets, but only very few of them are actually on duty at that time. As a result of Israel's mandatory draft, the IDF has a lot of young soldiers who live at home. Every thursday you'll see them streaming home to spend Shabbat with their families, and every sunday you'll see them streaming back to serve their country. Besides for the weekends there are always soldiers going back and forth from the base for whatever reason, so chances are you'll see quite a few on the streets, but especially in mass transit hubs like central bus stations.

Since I don't live in Israel, I get to see them on t.v. or in Israeli movies only.

You will not see troops, but you will see individual soldiers, or those in groups of 2, guarding stores and dormitories.
