I am a 16 year old girl still in high school and I wanted to know what can I do now to become a cop, or start to train. Should I become stronger, learn self defense, run more? What can I start to do now that will have me prepared for when I want to become a cop?

Congratulations on considering being an officer; it is a very rewarding, yet demanding job.

My advice for questions like this is usually the same. It is not just the physical or mental you need to worry about, but your lifestyle.

- Keep your finances clean. Pay your bills on time, every time. I know that at 16 that isn't really an issue, but soon it will be.

- Avoid any kind of drugs. Yes. Even marijuana.

- Avoid friends that could compromise your integrity and get you into trouble -- even with seemingly innocent acts. The less you have to explain when you are investigated for hiring, the better.

- Get your college degree. This will do a lot for you. It will open your eyes to other possible careers you have not yet considered and it will make you a much more competitive and balanced applicant.

- Get and stay in shape. Cardio and strength training are essential. Be consistent.

- Self-defense classes are great because they will build up your confidence as a person and as an officer. I would recommend Krav Maga, Aikido or Jujitsu.

- Have you looked into Explorer programs in your city? These are fantastic opportunities for young people who are considering a career in law enforcement. You will work with officers answering phones, processing evidence, and getting to know more about police work in general.

- KEEP YOUR NOSE CLEAN. Don't put yourself behind the eight-ball by getting involved in something you shouldn't. If it doesn't feel like the right thing to do, it probably isn't. ;-)

Lastly, work hard and stay focused. There is a serious need for good candidates now and in the foreseeable future. You are at the right age to start considering this career.

Good luck to you! ;-)

POST training is physically demanding so get in good shape, run alot, do many-many push ups :)
Thing is you must be 21 in most cases, our son is a cop and so is his best friend of many years. His friend is 20 years old and is not permitted to drive his unit (patrol car) by himself until he is 21. Sure, he can carry a gun, arrest people and all that but he has to have an officer ride with him on patrol (this is in New Mexico). Go to the loacl police and inquire as to the procedure for your state.

Just seems like a fun job! Who wouldn't want to get payed for driving fast, and ******* with people all day and after 25 years get a full retirement? I smoke weed and do illegal things all the time and becoming a cop still sounds fun.

Start by looking at the requirements for the departments you might be interested in working for.
See if there is a police explorers troop in your area.
Call the police department HR department of departments that interest you and ask them what you can do to make yourself a better candidate.
See if you can talk with police officers about the job.

Sweetie, I had a lot of fun at the job in the early days70's but thats all over now. Go to college, marry a rich guy and live happily ever after. Join the reserves if your city has one to get it out of your system.
