My kitten fractured his hind leg right above the growth plate. We took him to the vet and had to wear a huge splint for a few weeks.
After my cat got used to wearing the big cast, everything was fine. One day I notcied him shaking and he was very moody. I noticed an odd place near his cast, like a sore beginning from constant friction. We took him to the vet again and the doctor said it was just uncomfortable from the cast and that sores are common. He rewrapped his leg in an even LARGER cast and sent us home.
We took him back Tuesday for a check up and the doctor OKed him getting the splint off because his leg was healing wonderfully. He said they wrapped his leg back up in bandages because he had a few sores but that they should heal up fast. He said if the wrapping came off, it would be fine. We should have no worries, so we took his word for it.
The other night I noticed him whining and crying and licking his leg more than normal. I saw a large flesh wound that was a perfect rectangle shape about an inch long and panicked. My boyfriend's mother cut some of the cast off to prevent any more rubbing and friction and he seemed fine after that. But today we woke up and he is extremely moody and agitated and has an awful smell to him. I was trying to comfort him which he wouldn't tolerate [which is odd because he is extreeeeeemely affectionate and loves to be cuddled and covered in kisses]. I noticed the most foul stench coming from him. It smelled like a month old dead animal.
I am extremely worried. We are kind of leery taking him back to the emergency vet as to the bills from it already and the fact that we are weary of his practices now. It seems when you have a large flesh wound that it shouldn't be smothered or treated.
Has anyone ever experienced this or know what we should do? My cat is in a lot of pain and he has been through enough and it breaks my heart that his condition isn't getting better.
Thank you SO much.

We took him to the same clinic but a different doctor looked at him and took care of him free of charge. This doctor cut my cat's cast off and the shock of my kittens leg crushed me. His leg look squishy and literally DEAD. The odor was enough to make me gag, and I have a strong stomach. The poor cat had multiple oozing wounds and Cubby [my cat] was frantically licking my boyfriend's hands. I gave him a toy we brought from home and he was knawing like crazy on it, but the doctor said he wasn't in any pain. Riiight. He was taking him in the back to clean him up and banged kitty's bad leg w/ his clipboard. He came back and said there was no infection, but didn't test him or check his bloodwork. He basically wrapped it back up and we demanded antibiotics. He was unprofessional [clearly sick, didn't wash hands..NEVER wore any gloves! Handled kitty's sores bare-handed and all while hacking and coughing germs everywhere! & was VERY condescending to our questions] Some improvement

You need another vet.
NOW!!!
This could be an emergency. The dead tissue is making him sicker.
He will continue to get worse.
Yes, it could kill him.
I could go into detail, but you need to leave for the vet. (A DIFFERENT VET)

~ well I haven't been through this with a cat
but I have with my husband..
my husband had got the sores from the cast being too tight and not being properly wrapped and from the cast getting wet inside.
They ended up having to remove the cast and put him on high dose antibiotics to get rid of the infection.
have you looked to see if there is any puss coming out from the wound? if it is yellow and/or green your kitty has a bad infection that NEEDS to be looked at.. I would also take your kitty to another vet.. unless the other vet will see your cat for free as it would be a follow up and this infection could have been cause by the vet wrapping it too tight.
best of luck to you and your kitty and
Merry Christmas!

Change vets, just arrange for a checkup appointment and talk to the vet there after they've given the kitten a good looking over. He should not be in pain, they should have offered pain killers for him. And there should not be a smell that bad even from being in a cast.

Take him to another vet immediatly, get him treated, then file a complaint with the veterinary board (find the address for your state in the yellow pages under veterinarian). This is definately not right.

yeah i think you should get another opinion and try not to let your cat lick the wound as when he licks it, it will keep opening up and wont heal, i think that the vet should give you some antibiotics and maybe one of the things what you stick around the head to stop them from touching its wound and dont cover it as it wont heal, i hope the cat gets well soon :-)

Take him to your regular vet. It may be infected and needs treatment now. But a regular vet can do this - you don't need the emergency vet. But go today.

Go to a different vet and get him treated ASAP, he is literally rotting and it's painful, the stink is infection. It can kill him if left untreated.

If you don't trust your vet, then get a second opinion.
