When you get a tooth extracted, it fills up with a "plug" (blood and mucus) to keep it protected from the elements. If the plug gets pulled out (usually from a sucking motion like smoking, or drinking with a straw), it leaves the socket (which includes all the tooth's nerve endings) open and vulnerable to cold air, pressure from chewing, etc.

Call your dentist. He needs to check the socket to make sure there's no food in it. He will also give you a prescription for pain medication. Other than that, there's nothing you can do other than let it heal.

Sorry for your pain! I know what it's like.

Dry socket is when the socket of the pulled tooth gets air into it while trying to heal. Contact your dentist that pulled the tooth IMMEDIATELY and explain. They should be able to squeeze you in and get you some help.

Here is a link to possible treatment:

and further up that page is an explanation of what is happening and why.

Don't be scared. nothing to worry about. I had the same thing happen to me. The doctor ssaw me the same day and injected something that killed the pain. Then he explained that I had to place cottom balls in my mouth (1 by each socket), and bite down on them. I know that sounds paradoxical, but the heat from your mouth keeps the cotton warm and moist, and really helped me to prevent the dry sockets from re-occuring.

Hope it helps.
