Did they magnify themselves in their heart and not stay humble, or did they do it for the sake of filthy lucure?

Brother Chris,
How would anyone know that someone was a true believer? What would be their works, words, wherein you would know?

Jesus gave the answer, if you continue reading that sentence in Matthew 7:21: "...but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven." Such ones please him and their works are acceptable.

This shows the crucial need of ascertaining what God's will is for our lives, as believers. There are a million 'things' we could do for the Lord, but unless we humbly wait upon him to guide us by his Holy Spirit into what HE wants us to do, it will end in disaster. Once we are in the Father's will, our works will bear much fruit and bring glory to his name, because we will be 'abiding' in Jesus.

In answer to the first question - I believe it will be those who go to church and think they are okay, but have never really come to the place where they really understood their need for salvation and made it personal. You know, the people who believe Jesus died for our sins, but have never asked Him to forgive them for *their* sins and put their faith in Him to save them. It will be all the people who are tragically being taught that we are saved through good works, baptism, or communion. Those poor people will be standing before Him thinking that, because they have been good people and done things for the Lord, they will be forgiven and allowed into heaven. What a heartbreaking day that will be for all of them!

As for the second question - I don't understand it and so I can't answer. Sorry!

God knows the persons heart, as we see here:

1 Samuel 16:7 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)
Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

There is NO WAY, that they will be able to decieve Him.

Either one would apply, I would think.

Are we being/speaking outwardly righteous, holding ourselves up as "the light" for vanity's sake, or worse yet, for profit, when our faith is only skin deep?

It's easier for me to understand that scripture by looking at it from a proactive stance:

In every situation, what would the Savior of the world do and what would He feel inside towards another as He did it?

Then go and do likewise.

These words were NOT for the apostles and disciples, Jesus gave these words as a WARNING to the Pharases and the Scribes and Saducees, those in the temple who were claiming to do good works in his name but in fact weren't.

What, then, if individuals or institutions claim to be followers of Christ but do not, in fact, practice what Jesus taught? Jesus himself said that many would claim to be Christians. They would point to various activities to prove that they had served him, saying: “Did we not prophesy in your name, and expel demons in your name, and perform many powerful works in your name?” How, though, would Jesus react? His dramatic words express his judgment: “I never knew you! Get away from me, you workers of lawlessness.”—Matthew 7:22, 23.

What a stark warning for “workers of lawlessness” who claim to follow Jesus!

"Lord Lord" is DOUBLEminded = UNstable(James 1)
either way of such division-all Mt 7 & 25 LAW LAW,
of one who is both Son of man & Son of God on high.

Getting high on law vs law will get you killed either way,
since Law vs Law is as Loser vs Loser in my Bible. For
even when it's many vs few it's still partiality & hypocrisy.

POINT: "there is no respect of persons with God".
There's only such partiality & hypocrisy against God.

Grace --> Mercy ---> Peace with you all. Amen.

I believe it is referring to professing Christians who serve themselves, for vain glory, for self-interest, & not serving the Lord with a pure heart....the stuff of which false prophets are made...A tree is known by its fruit....

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bringeth forth good fruit.
Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them" (Matthew 7:15-20 KJV)

Yes, exactly. Some would have you believe that all you have to do is have faith - well even satan has faith.

Everything that one does is to be for the glory of God. Works in themselves do not save you, but faith without works is dead.
