Oh Yeah! I gave up on that one a while back. You see, I've been raised in family business all my life. First my grandad owned his own business and now may parents. It's really all I've known since I was really little. I've always loved it and worked right in there beside them since I was like 13. Somewhere in there my dad of course let me know that he would be passing the business on to us (his 3 daughters) or whom of us wanted it anyway when the time came. (of course, between us three I was the only one that wanted it.) I let college pass me by to go straight to work for my dream of running the place some day. I've worked in every capacity available in the company short of being the owner. Now... in the last year or so, my mother has made it clear that it will be "over her dead body" that I'm allowed to take over this company. She's declared that she'll sell it right out from under me first. (and she has the say so to do that) Not because I'm not capable, but simply b/c she thinks this "little adventure" is "frivolous" and we should all be working "real jobs". Keep in mind that this "little adventure" has kept us all clothed and fed (and very well I might add) for over 20 years. So now here I am with nothing to show for the 17 years of work and sweat I've put into this place, about to turn 30, never been to college. My only choices are to either keep doing the same ole same ole till my mother drives this place into the ground or start all over and go back to college. (Which the later by the way I can't afford to do right now, being the main family supporter and having 3 children)

So, yes, I've given up and surrendered myself to the fact that I'm as far as I'll ever be. I make good money doing what all I do and I'm killing myself slowly doing it... but none the less... I love this place.

No, I am hoping to still make it. So far, no luck really. I have been employed in smaller companies with fewer opportunities and a thin management structure. I have always been low down the list in terms of seniority and also haven't really had the right credentials. It sucks. I feel I have to enter into a new industry now and start near the bottom and work up. Can I still do this at 32?

Yup...I had an overbearing and abusive boss; worked for a company that preached one message to the public but practiced the entire opposite in the offices; has the most messed up HR system; and I was working 17 hour days, getting really fat, suffering from depression, and poor health because I gained 50 lbs because I never had time to work out.

So I quit and became a ski bum and sold ski gear, camping gear, etc. Now I get paid to hike, kayak, ride bikes, and on days like today...sit in my office and lament about my old crappy corporate job.

I miss the $14K more I used to make, but overall I'm really not missing the old job at all.

I have found that the only way up is to get out. The places I've worked underestimate the best ones and raise those who are most obvious. The workers that kick butt and don't make or take excuses are left to continue to be workers without any benefit of advancement....

No giving up, just getting out.

I found that if you can't get up in your current career it may be time for a chance of career choice as well as companies.

Great question by the way.

Health became an issue with me. Also, I found the higher I went the quality of the people declined.

I'm working on a second career as a writer and songsmith.

Peace, Alan K

Why would you give up? What does it hurt to continue trying? What are you losing? Nothing compared to what you could possibly gain!

I would only quit trying to climb if I was A) perfectly happy in the position I'm in, B) perfectly happy with the amount of money I'm making, or C) a huge lottery winner.

Keep trying!

Yes and no. There are some days when it's really frustrating and discouraging and there are others when it seems like there is hope.

It's difficult though, so I go back and forth.
