Primitive man was both fearful of the natural events and predators, as well as curious about his surroundings. Anything that helped him understand why things happen and how he could protect himself would make him feel safer. In a quest for security and understanding, he seeks answers. His tribal leaders and elders come up with a concept of powerful nature 'spirits' who act like men and women but with super-natural powers that control the weather and natural phenomena and animals. So, primitive man comes to believe in these 'spirits' and seek their favors to protect them. Usually, it is the tribal elders or leaders who are believed to be in 'contact' or 'commune' with these 'spirits'. Over time, as civilization developed, the idea of 'spirits' evolve into 'deities' or 'gods', and to one chief 'god'. Almost without fail, these 'gods' or 'god' have human emotions and tendencies and appearence. Why? Because the idea of 'gods' or 'god' was a human idea, and the world of the 'gods' or 'god' resembles an idealized form of the human world. The idea of the afterlife is also a human conceptualization, which is to seek answers for how one could transcend death, in other words, to overcome death.
In conclusion, the motivation all comes down to self-preservation and how one could transcend all the undesirable elements of life and death.

There have been many purposes for creating gods throughout the ages. Control of the Masses; simple need to explain our existence as something greater; historical mythology; and greed to name a few.
It seems that there is something inherent in us as a species that begs us to explain the unexplained. Ironically, the Greeks (who had more gods than they knew what to do with) made it a point that in theater: a writer was a poor writer if they used the intervention of a god to save a story line. They thought it to be a sign of lack of creativity. Yet, they repeatedly used Divine intervention as a plot tool. Even the greatest of the Greek writers did this, Homer included.
Now-a-days it seems simple to jump to the conclusion that every good outcome in a seemingly impossible situation is the result of a miracle. Why because our simple brains cannot see that sometimes luck-is-luck and there is no need to explain it any further than that. We feel so self-important that it had to be god him/herself that intervened on our behalf. If there is a god, I hope he/she decides to focus on the real problems of the world, instead of whether or not someone survives some stunt they shouldn't have been performing in the first place.
That said, if I am ever trapped in a car for days and days in a ditch with serious injuries--I will be praying for a miracle... or at least some good luck.

Man has a need to create god(s) because when there is something that he cannot explain, the easiest way out is to pin it on something/someone else. Once science uncovers the mysteries, then the godliness is somewhat removed by the more intelligent of the species. Of course, there will always be "sheeple" to follow a fairy tale that has no proof. They will follow books like the quran, bible, and torah, which are basically war manuals and instructions on how to keep yourself clean. If there are good lessons in those books, it is just common sense that everyone should already have... unfortunately, most people don't have the common sense to realize that you should not kill, steal, dishonor, and so on and so on... So that is why man creates god, it is a scapegoat for his shortcomings.

Freud was cute when he said "if there was no God man would have to invent one." In case you didn't know Freud was an atheist.
Who knows what man's motivation is for inventing God, maybe we never grow up and always stay afraid of the dark.
I'd rather like to reverse your question and ask what's God motivation for creating us? I find that question a bit trickier to answer.
Who knows if there is anything beyond this life, if there's any there out there. All I can say for sure is live by your principals and rock on. And if there is a heaven, home to a kind and loving God, then I hope to meet you there someday.

Power and Control....since the beginning of time man has felt vulnerable....it is basic phsycology...the way our brains work cause us to build up values and beliefs to be able to have an equal librium of some kind...How many times have you heard that nothing is scarier than the unknown? The problem with religion...is that when our core beliefs get questioned (especially by another) we get fearful and fear causes anger!

The Anti-Christ does not % peace yet quite evil. As for us God created us for yet another excuse. God being God had each and every thing yet no one to proportion it with, so He created us in His photograph in His likeness through fact we are the only ones in a position us receiving all of His invaluable presents, so He created us to proportion with us expertise, awareness, information, Mercy, Grace, Kindness, faith, desire, Peace, exhilaration, fact and fairly Love and that we would proportion in a perpetual giving and receiving of love that endures continuously, this the Anti-Christ can not accomplish nor do as he's the different of all issues no longer desirous to furnish yet quite take, no longer desirous to love yet quite hate, yet God he's mild, existence, and fairly Love.

well there the fact that if you tamper with the devil toys your going to get burnt Ouija board for eg: my aunts have used them to call the dead which I highly recommend you not to do for it can hurt you and is very dangerous experience that tell me that there is more out there Christianity has come along with facts of what the messiah would do when he comes and how he would be treated evidence is there ,showing a higher power involved ,not created there is more evidence that shows of his birth the punishment he went though eg:Isaiah53v5to7 and experience of my own ' certain family members who done witch craft. There is only one name god has given us to honour that is Jesus call upon his name when the devil attacks for he is the light of the world and the devil cant stand his name because the name of Jesus has all powers over the devil and gave it to us to have authority

I believe it is a spiritual hunger. The spirit longs for acceptance, understanding, compassion, and most of all love. If the world with all it's natural resources could satisfy this specific hunger we wouldn't have to look somewhere else but, the world can't satisfy that is why we seek God the only one that can satisfy our spiritual hunger.
by the way, it is not us who created God it is he who created us.

The motivation is humanity's innate drive to transcend. We feel driven by it both from our inner being and attracted and called by the forces of the universe to seek truth and strive to transcend whatever we are at a given moment. Our science suggests we seek truth to transcend the physical reality and our spiritual quest suggests an inner vision that seeks truth to transcend its current level of knowledge and understanding of itself. We appear to be compelled from both without and within. The question is, towards what do these drives compel us? I would say, the desire for the ultimate truth, the ultimate reality.

Many historians, and I also, believe that man uses the creation of gods, to justify things happining in the natural world! Such as the Roman gods and goddess's such as posieden, whom they used to explain the sunami's as him being angry and punishing rome, They also used gods to explain there fortune at war, if they lost, they would think that they upset the god ares, and that was there punishment! Hope it helps a little
