I am very sorry for your loss, however your cat may have had an underlying heart condition known as Cardiomyopathy.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy -- a heart disease where areas of heart muscle enlarge and thicken -- is the most common heart disease in cats. Although it develops and progresses over time, its early signs may be subtle or nonexistent. A cat that seems healthy may appear to become very ill very quickly, or even die suddenly.
HCM is most commonly seen in cats less than five years old.
the only way to determine the cause of death in your cat would be to have an autopsy.
I know your pain, my 16 year old cat died in November. :(

hi dear
i share your grief and i was in your position way back in 2004 on morning of 26dec , when i woke up to find 4 of my healthy cats just lay 'frozen/harden' on a floor in my cattery.Just the night before , they had their 'last dinner' fed by me and looked okay. That the morning i planned to take flight to Bangkok and then to Pattaya beach. That the morning i cried while burying the 4 cats and cancel my trip. That the day later i heard on TV about the Tsunami. That the day the 4 cats given their 9 lives to let me be alived.
i know i don't really answer your question , but the vet told me the chances were the cats got sudden heart attacks - but all 4 at the same time ? Poisoning ? nope coz the rest of the cats also ate the same food.
So dear , just keep on keeping cats and other pets and these pets will be the ones that really understand you when you are really depressed.
how many cats i have ? checked out the link

and you decide yourself.i just hope after this your grief will be gone coz if it is still there , the other cat[s] you gonna keep will feel it too-that you loved OnyX more that you love them.

I'm sorry to hear about Onyx :( It must be really hard not understanding why he passed away. With no urine or feces near him though, I'd take that as a sign that he died without pain at least.
Chances are this was just a small defect in his body that finally took its toll, but knowing that won't bring him back. I'm sorry...

There may have been nothing you didn't see. Don't blame yourself.
I have known several people whose cats suddenly flopped. If they saw it happen, they would find that the hind legs were cold; no circulation. A blood clot had suddenly lodged in the part of the artery where it devides to serve both legs. It may have originated in a heart that had a hidden defect. Most of them die very quickly.
That's just one possible explanation. What you know is that he didn't suffer long, because you would have awakened if he were crying.
I'm so sorry this happened to you and your kitty. But it wasn't your fault, and if/when you choose to get another kitty, it's very, very unlikely you'll be stricken again in this way.

I came home from work one day and my cat SaraJane was dead on the counter. I called the vet and took her in so he could do a necropsy. We raise cats as a hobby and needed to know if it was something catching or something that could be passed on to kittens, otherwise we would have just buried her. She had one part of her heart that was extremely large. The vet said it was congenital so we didn't have to worry about it being contagious. She was a very cheerful cat and I miss her.

Do you have your Christmas tree already set up? Does it have tinsel on it? (he may have ingested a long line of tinsel and stomach/bowels become obstructed) Could he have bitten into an electric cord and been electrocuted? These are all questions that you should ask yourself. If he died almost instantaneously, he may not have "eliminated". I'm REALLY SORRY that you lost your "baby". We don't even have Christmas decorations or live plants in our house, since we have cats and they WILL get into trouble! Even my electric cords are wrapped in coil (like coiled phone cord), to keep kitty teeth away from harm. Again......I really feel your pain.

I am so sorry to hear about your cat!
There are many ways your cat could have died. It could have eaten something poisonous, could of had a heart problem that you didn't know about, and the possiblities go on.
Again, I'm so sorry about your cat, I kow how it feels, we had 2 cats die from the food recall

Life happens. Just grieve, and go the shelter, and find another cat that needs a loving home.
