I would be using the lens for wildlife photography. I am looking for a good telephoto for action shots (e.g. birds) under $2000

200 is really not long enough for birds unless they are big and close. The 70-200 is optically better than the 18-200. Birders usually have long *expensive* lenses in the 400 to 600mm range at f/4, and usually with a teleconverter to boot and a very superior tripod. You really can't get set up for birds (not on a serious level, anyway) for $2000.

I would recommend possibly the Nikon 80-400mm VR f/4.5-5.6 lens. It's not as fast focusing as some lenses, but it's also not near as expensive. You can usually get one for around $1,400-$1,600 depending on the store. I prefer Adorama for most of my purchases. I shoot sports action with this lens quite often because it's light. Only at night do I bust out the 400mm f/2.8 because simply put... that thing is a BEAST!!!

Invest in the 2X teleconverter from Nikon.

An alternative might be the 2X Teleplus offered by Adorama. You can check it out at adorama.com.

A tripod will be of use or a good monopod.
