They don't usually. A throat culture is used for strep, and a blood test could tell you if there's an excess of white blood cells, but if the doctor thinks you have the flu, they don't usually give you any tests.

It is a nasal swab, it test for both Flu a&B. It takes about 10 minutes, but they generally don't bother to test for it.

they can't test for the flu. they diagnose by symptoms. they can test for infections to rule out the flu by taking blood.

The others are right, the test it by swabbing your nose with a big q-tip and testing it for certain antigens. It is a very painless and quick test procedure.

Generally, they just take a list of your symptoms. I think for flu it includes body aches, fever, chills, cough and so on. Pretty subjective but virus diagnosises generally are.

They normally don't bother - you just treat the symptoms anyway. Unless it's an extremely serious variant there's no point knowing exactly what it is.
