About two weeks ago, my jaw started to hurt. For a couple of days, it hurt to chew. It doesn't hurt to chew anymore, but it is really stiff and hurts in the morning when I wake up, but this usually goes away after about 20 minutes or so. What do you think might be going on? No swelling, just stiffness and some pain...

You are clinching or grinding your teeth at night and that is why your jaw is stiff and it hurts in the morning. Alot of times people start to grind there teeth because they are under alot of stress. You should go see your dentist and have him make you a night guard to sleep in so you are not grinding on your teeth. This can cause alot of problems for you such as dislocating your jaw which will require surgery. Grinding your teeth can also cause your teeth to crack which will lead to having a root canal done or a crown done to fix the tooth. If you crack the root of the tooth then you will have to have the tooth taken out. As you already know it causes alot of pain. You can go to Walmart and get a night guard called The Doctor's Night Guard to try out until you can go to the dentist and have them make you a permanent one. It will help out alot. I have to wear one so I understand the pain you are having and it really does hurt. I hope that you feel better soon.

It sounds like tmj (tempora -mandibular joint disease) In this disorder people grind their teeth more so at night and the jaw can often heard to be "clicking" You need to see your dentist. You may need a mouth guard especially at night. Stress aggravates this problem.

It sounds like you may have TMJ syndrome. Do you clench your teeth or grit them while sleeping? Silly question, I know, but this is often the cause of TMJ. You can be fitted for a mouth guard by a dentist, (expensive) or you can get a cheap one from a drugstore and try it to see if that helps. Also, ibuprofin may help.

Your probably a night-time teeth and jaw grinder like myself. You can talk to your dentist, but He/she will probably tell you to go to a store and buy yourself a rubber mouth guard that fits on your teeth at night. I have never bought one because I am a light sleeper and can only assume something jammed into my mouth is going to keep me awake at night.
