Good Question! I though it was just where I work! They pretend like they don't even see you!

They are just rude!

There are several reasons. Some people are less outgoing than others. Some may be busy and have their minds elsewhere! Some may be unhappy at the moment, and not feel like smiling!

In today's politically correct business world, there are some people who are afraid that any friendly contact or comment could be misconstrued, and used against them. A simple "You look nice today" from a male supervisor to a female employee could find the supervisor charged with sexual harassment! People have little to smile about!

Well, "Poopsy", I beg to disagree with all these other people who say that these "non-smilers" are being rude. I have personally been accused of this one, and it wasn't the case at all. This would usually occur while I would be walking through the office with several things in my hand that had to be copied, another list of many things I had to pull from the file cabinet, accompanied by another list of things I needed to get out of the supply area, and perhaps a stack of messages from the receptionist on who I needed to call back. I was just too deep in thought to even notice that someone was smiling at me---sometimes, even waving at me--YES! Get used to it, Honey---this comes with the territory in well-paid secretarial/administrative assistant positions where you have a LOT of "multi-tasking" (another created word for: Hey, you're doing the jobs of 3 people and only getting the salary of 1 1/2!) going on. I don't think they are being rude at all--they are concentrating on what they are paid to concentrate on--WORK, not socializing.

maybe some people don't like their job that much so they don't have much to smile about...but if i smile at people and they don't smile back, i ignore it and i don't dwell on it....some people just don't know how to smile and be happy

It's the times.
Anymore, people are afraid to make any contact with another person in fear of some sort of harassment lawsuit.
Just the changing of the times we live in.

Well, I know sometimes I don't smile back when people smile at me, and it's because I'm very busy or worried about something or upset about something. When I was younger I especially didn't smile back at my coworkers, because I was more selfish and cared more about how I was feeling stressed or sad than I cared about being a team player or friendly. So, maybe your coworkers are imature, or they're just really super grumpy. Don't let it get you down. When the nonsmiling coworker is on break or at the end of a shift ask them, "hey, I noticed you looked kinda stressed earlier, how are you doing?" There is nothing wrong with smiling at coworkers and it wouldn't hurt to say hello to them as you pass them in the hall. We need more workers like you in our office.
