Stay at home !

Get a job and save for your fare. You will need something to live on in NY as well so you need to factor that in.

Don't leave home without having made provision for a place to stay even if you have to book in a Youth Hostel. Don't be found roaming the city streets aimlessly, this is when you'll be at risk of falling into the hands of a pimp or worse. Your whole life could change in an afternoon to a horror that lasts for years.

I really wouldn't do what you are planning. I would not come to New York without any money. Even if you are the luckiest person in the world and the most amazing dancer, the odds are against you.

Im just assuming that you dont be topless dancing: First you should get a job where ever u are and save up as much money as you can. Then when u think u have enough funds, find an apartment before u come to ny. You will need a job when u get here. If you want to be a dancer, you will have to go on auditions so you will need a flexible job. Maybe waitressing or something like that. In my opinion one of the best places to find dancing gigs would be backstage. They have a website and newspaper.

Either way, good luck and think long and hard before u move to a big city like NY with no money.

I came to NYC 9 years ago to make it in theater. I only had $1000. I didn't know anyone. I got a very cheap hotel room that I rented by the week, and immediately began looking for work. I got a restaurant job, but I did not have enough money for a deposit on an apartment, so I lived in the hotel for three months. Finally I saved enough to get a studio apartment in Queens. I started auditioning and did a lot of crap. Though eventually I made friends and begin working. It will be ten years ago this coming summer, now I live on Park Ave. and have worked on about eight Broadway shows, a national tour and countless other projects, so there you go, you can be reckless and spontaneous and broke and make it in NY. And I am not blond or tall. :) I don't know where you are coming from, but in NYC you need a bit of cash to find an apartment, at least first and last months rent. I suggest you look on Craigslist for a shared apartment, you will have roomates, but you will have a place. If you can wait a little longer and bring at least $2000, you will have a much easier time than I did living in that roach motel for three months. You also need to be tough, and focused. NYC is a hard place to move, make sure you have a resume, even for crappy jobs. I don't know if you are a good dancer or not, but I wish you luck. I figured that people might post telling you that you were crazy to do it, so I thought I'd let you know that it can be done. I came alone, everyone thought I was crazy, but I'm so glad I did. Best to you.

Ummm... when you say you want to become a dancer....
Are we talking Stripper or Dancer as in Broadway or Ballet?
Because coming to New York without any money trying to become famous is a really, really really bad idea.
I work in New York City and I've been involved with the entertainment industry, especially theater for a while.
One thing I can tell you for sure: you can't just show up here and expect to start making a living being a dancer. It won't happen.
If you're planning on hiring yourself out as a Gogo dancer to some cheap strip clubs, there's a chance you might find a place to work right away, but as far as serious dancing is concerned -
you need to go to auditions (which don't happen all the time, because most places only hire once for the entire season), work your way up...
and you'll need a place to stay (which in itself in an expensive thing).
If you decide that you want to take the plunge and chance it, my advise would be to save up at least $3000 as starter capital before you come here. This should allow you to find a place to stay and keep you above water until you find a job.
Expect:
To work in a fast food place or someplace else that hires people for short amounts of time until you find some places to audition for.
To go to many auditions and NOT get any part
Read the Village Voice (free entertainment newspaper - comes out every wednesday in NYC)
Go online to places like Broadway.com, Craigslist.org... see if you can find classifieds advertising auditions.
Don't expect:
To show up in New York and find opportunities at every corner.
These days, a lot of success in any business depends on insider knowledge, the people you know - and as a newcomer, building that will take a while.

I'm not saying it can't be done - what I'm telling you is to be careful, cover your back financially and emotionally and work your butt off.
If you're not easily discouraged by setbacks, you can make it here.

Good luck!

Please tell me that you mean actual artistic style of dancing (ballet, jazz).

HOWEVER if you ARE talking about topless dancing, yeah there are places in NYC that will take any good looking woman on. And yeah, money can be made. Though I wouldn't embark a full time career out of it since once you pass a certain age (probably 35), then you're "washed up".

If topless dancing is what you want to do, then there are strip clubs all over NYC. If you are THAT SMOKING HOT, then maybe a Scores or Hustler will take you on...and that's the BIG bucks right there.

But if you are about artistic dancing, yes that does take a lot of practice and hard work but eventually you can make it. I wish you luck in that sense.

Don't be implusive. Be patient. NYC is tough. Many ambitious and talented folks here. The competition for artistic jobs is fierce, and if you aren't careful, the competition will eat you. Just plan ahead, move in with a friend. And take a less desirable job so you'll have money to fall back on when the dancing career hits bumps and dumps.

Don't do this. The streets are filled with young people who came to the city with dreams and no money. They are prey to predators just waiting for people like that.
If you really want to do this, you need to save up some money and then get some leads on a job. Be smart about this or it will be the worst thing you have ever done in your life.

What kind of dancer, have you been accepted by a company or school? New York is a high price town it's a good idea to have a place to stay (sharing an apartment is a good idea) before you get here. Good Luck.

get an agent, a job and an apartment BEFORE you get here or you'll end up on the street working for some pimp.
