Evgeny Kissin is one of the greatest pianists ever lived. And that concerto is one which I'm aiming to be able to play at least once in my lifetime. It's so beautiful. Rachmaninov can be spelled both ways (nov or noff, both are correct).

I am going against the popular current here and will say No. Receiving instruction from an experienced teacher will give you SO much more to learn about playing MUSIC. Books alone will teach how to find the notes some basic rhythm but they cannot give you the nuances of technique and artistry that a real live teacher can. For instance, having studied piano before, you may be able to sit down and teach yourself to play Beethoven's Fur Elise. But - after you learn the notes - a teacher would then show you how to play the piece with the appropriate artistry: Is it a fast piece? Why at the end do some versions say "Morendo"? Is it a happy piece? When you learn to approach a piece, whether it's classical, jazz, or contemporary, having someone teach you how to respond to the music is key--in fact, that's what you're paying for! True, an ape copuld probably learn the musicla alphabet, but you want to be an awesome pianist? Take a few lessons--it can't hurt! (ps: you may want to bring the music you want to play to an instructor and ask them to work on it with you)

Great player, but the composer is spelled incorrectly---it's "Rachmaninoff."
